Interview: Old Forge Hardware’s founder Moses Cohen

On May 10, 1922, the Old Forge Hardware store built by Moses Cohen burned to the ground. Today, that year is engraved under the Cohen name on the façade of the present store.

After three days, the fire was still burning coal, construction materials and other debris and would smolder for days to come.

But Moses Cohen continued to operate, securing office room in the Givens Block and permission from Old Forge Village to put in shelves and stock up the Fire Hall (today’s Nathan’s Bakery) as fast as trucks could deliver the goods.

In 1923, his rebuilt store sold everything from “paints, bath tubs and up to the best in parlor suites.”

A year after the fire, the Utica Daily Press interviewed Mr. Cohen in an article titled “Moses Cohen’s Story of Struggle to Top” as the current store was being completed.

Though the copy is barely legible and hampered my transcription, I thought this early story about his beginnings in Old Forge a worthy note to the town’s early history and how one man overcame ethnic prejudice with sound business practices.

Red Hatters plan picnic

All area Red Hatters are invited to a picnic at Brynilsen’s Viking Village at 2387 South Shore Rd. (near Inlet) on Tuesday, August 16.

The picnic will begin at noon and will take place rain or shine.

All are asked to bring a dish to pass and $5 to cover the cost of meat and beverages. Cake will be provided.

Contact Jan Brynilsen at (315) 357-3150 by Sunday, August 14 to let her know how many will be attending. Carpooling is recommended. All friends are welcome.

Raquette Lake Craft Fair set Aug. 13

The Raquette Lake Parents Teachers and Friends organization will sponsor the 21st annual Arts and Crafts Fair at the Raquette Lake School on Rt. 28 on Saturday, August 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This is a juried show with all items being displayed for sale the work of the exhibitor on site, the majority of who reside in the Adirondack Park.

Among the Adirondack artists exhibiting their work are Fawn Ridge Pottery of Chestertown and South Bay Jewelry of Raquette Lake.

Lis Barsuglia-Madsen will return with her handwoven clothing, rugs and accessories and Sharron Knapp of Saranac Lake will feature Continue reading

Inlet’s Adirondack Reader to host Annual Authors Fair on Aug. 14th

The Adirondack Reader of Inlet will host the Fifth Annual Authors Fair and Book Signing on Sunday, August 14 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Reggie Chambers, owner of the book store, has gathered 25 popular regional authors who will have the opportunity to meet their readers and sign and sell books.

This year’s participants include Gary and Justin Van Riper, authors of the Adirondack Kids series and Gladys Montgomery, author of “An Elegant Wilderness: Great Camps and Grand Lodges of the Adirondacks, 1855-1935. Continue reading

Anne LaBastille: Twitchell Lake site of public memorial service

A public memorial service for Anne LaBastille, author, photographer and Adirondack guide, will take place Saturday and Sunday, August 20 and 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the shoreline of Twitchell Lake. LaBastille passed away July 1, 2011 in Plattsburgh, NY.

Due to an anticipated large crowd, private cars will not be permitted on site as there is not enough room to accommodate them. Continue reading

Big Moose Chapel Guide’s Dinner slated for Saturday, August 13

The Big Moose Community Chapel’s annual Adirondack Guide’s Dinner is a unique and different dining experience in the Adirondacks.

This year’s dinner will be held on Saturday, August 13 in recognition of the Chapel’s 80th Anniversary. Dinner will be served from 5 to 7 p.m., rain or shine, on the lakefront lawn of the Big Moose Community Chapel. Continue reading
