18th annual event Go-Karts to rev Tuesday for Calypso’s Cove charity race

Established in 1994, the Calypso’s Cove Charity Go-Kart Race seeks to raise money within the community for local charities, organizations and families in need.

Since its inception, the Go-Kart race has raised over $170,000. This event brings local businesses together to vie for the coveted trophy and to work together as a community for worthy causes.

The 18th Annual Calypso’s Cove Charity Go-Kart Race will take place on Tuesday, September 13. A rain date is set for Thursday, September 15.

The beneficiaries this year include the Friends of the Polar Bears, to aid their effort of purchasing a yurt for McCauley Mountain, and MAC’s Safe Ride, to aid in the effort to purchase a larger van.

All are encouraged to come out to the race and support the local community and these two worthy causes.

Gates will open at 5 p.m. with racing to begin at 5:30 p.m. sharp. The entry fee for a team of five racers is $225. Each racer will drive in two heats.

The entry fee covers the cost of admission, food and beverage for the race team. Team leaders should send their check for $225 and a list of five racers to Calypso’s Cove Charity Go-Kart Race, 3183 State Route 28, Old Forge, NY 13420.

The deadline for entry is 5 p.m. Monday, September 12, unless the team limit has been met.

Racers should call (315) 369-6145 to confirm postponement due to rain the day of the race.

Spectators will be admitted for a donation of $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12. The donation includes food and beverage.

Charlotte at Daiker’s: A night of great music, great memories

Charlotte Lenkowsky was admittedly a little surprised by the size of the crowd that showed up at Daiker’s Inn on Monday evening, August 29 to hear her play the piano.

Earlier that day when her friend Midge Daiker, who prompted the nostalgic performance, told her the staff was hooking up a microphone for the show, Charlotte told Midge not to bother.

“Who’s going to show up, six or seven people?” she said.

But around 6 p.m. cars started to fill the lower parking. By 7:30 p.m. the upper parking area was filled to capacity and folks were being shuttled down the hill by golf cart. Continue reading

Rubber Duckies to race down Moose River for prizes this weekend

Tim Foley, chairman of CAP-21’s CAPPY Duck Derby that will take place on Sunday, September 4, paid a visit to Town of Webb Supervisor Robert Moore on Wednesday, August 31 to retrieve the CAPPY Duck costume which has been worn by many folks throughout the summer to promote the fundraising event.

Foley found Moore, who is not seeking re-election, sitting in his office wearing the head of the costume.

“Is it true you ducked the election this year?” Foley asked.

“I’ve heard enough wise quacks about me being a Lame Duck, but I’m not ducking any questions, so ask whatever you want,” Moore quipped.

Foley reminded Moore that the Duck Head has to be returned for the Derby festivities on Sunday.

The event will begin with a Pancake Breakfast at the American Legion Hall from 7:30 to 11 a.m.

There will also be Face Painting and music before the noon launch of the ducks over the Old Forge bridge into the Moose River.

The owner or sponsor of the first duck to reach the finish line one-quarter mile away, will win $1,000. Other cash prizes and gifts will also be won by lucky duck owners.

Ducks will be available the morning of the launch for $5 each or $20 for a flock of five. They are also available by calling (315) 369-3353 or through PayPal at: Info@Cap-21.org or on the webbing at www.cap-21.org.
