Plein Air: Friday reception, Saturday cocktail party among weekend events

Over Labor Day weekend, Friday through Sunday, September 2 to 4, View, the new arts center in Old Forge, will host the third annual Plein Air Paint-Out in Old Forge.

The event will kick-off Friday with an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. for Jason Tennant’s exhibit, “Nike of the Forest” and Peter Chamberlain’s exhibit, “HyBRIDge.”

The opening will be held in conjunction with the First Friday Art Walk and admission is free.

A “Paint Your Palette” cocktail party and silent auction will be featured at View on Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m.

The cocktail party will feature hors d’oeuvres inspired by international cuisines and beer, wine and soda tastings.

Beverages will be provided by Saranac Brewery, Old Forge Liquors, and Montezuma Winery which will also be providing samples of its Bee Vodka.

As guests enjoy refreshments they will have the opportunity to observe a variety of artists who will be demonstrating their art live throughout the gallery.

“This is a brand new event where viewers can actually see the creative process behind the artists’ works,” said Barbara “BJ” Baumann, coorganizer of the event.

Music will be provided by Adam Reynolds, and the Gwen Tracy Band. The “bid at your leisure” silent auction will include the works created throughout the evening by six area artists.

Among those who will be offering demonstrations are watercolor artists Roland Stevens and Gordon Bashant.

Others will be Paula Tormey, who creates precious metal clay jewelry; basket maker Barbara Green; textile artist Kate Miller; and Barbara Baumann who will explain the silk-screening process as she paints special edition designs of View’s Url the Moose on T-shirts.

At 7:30 p.m., the silent auction will close and winners will be announced. Guests need not be present to win.

Tickets are $15 and available at the front desk at View, at the Old Forge Visitor Information Center in Old Forge, or by calling View at (315) 369-6411.

Tickets can also be purchased at the door the day of the event.

Admission includes the tastings, a meet and greet with Plein Air and area artists, admission to the Adirondacks National Exhibition of American Watercolors, Jason Tennant’s “Nike of the Forest,” and Peter Chamberlain’s “HyBridge.”

On Sunday, all are invited to an auction under a tent at the grassy knoll of the Forge Motel.

The live auction will showcase over 80 paintings that were created en plein air over the weekend.

The auction preview is at 4 p.m. The auction will begin at 5 p.m. and will end in time for all to enjoy the Labor Day fireworks at the lakefront. Beer and wine will be available for sale under the tent. More information about View’s weekend events is available at (315) 369-6411 or online at: www.ViewArt.org.
