Dr. Vaccaro to present program at the library

Dr. Louis Vaccaro is scheduled to give a power point presentation at the Old Forge Library on Thursday, September 29 at 7 p.m.

The subject of Vaccaro’s presentation will be China: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow.

A native Californian, Dr. Vaccaro and his wife, Linda, make their permanent home in Las Vegas, NV and spend summers in Old Forge. Continue reading

Two events planned at Old Forge Library

PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT

The Old Forge Library will present an exhibit, “Photography Abhors and Empty Wall”, featuring the work of digital photographer Roy Senn. The exhibit will be on display at the library from Friday, September 9 through Monday, October 31.

Senn’s photographs emulate the work of master pictorial photographers such as Ansel Adams, Elliott Porter, and Joseph Muench.

Over the years, Senn’s work has been printed in numerous publications including Adirondack Life, National Wildlife, and Outdoor and Travel Photography Magazine.

As part of the First Friday Artwalk, the Old Forge Library will host a reception for Senn on Friday, October 7 from 1 to 3 p.m. Continue reading

Jersey 9/11 event set at library

The Old Forge Library will host a Community Conversation to discuss the legacy of service that has developed globally in the aftermath of September 11, 2001.

This discussion will be held at the library on Friday, September 9 at 7 p.m. and will focus on the ways in which New Yorkers, and people everywhere, have been transformed and connected through service work in the aftermath of the tragedy.

Led by Paula Alida Roy, those interested can RSVP to the library at (315) 369-6008.

First Friday… Participants announce offerings for next Old Forge Art Walk on Sept. 2

A First Friday Art Walk in Old Forge will take place on September 2 from 5 to 8 p.m. All are invited to visit participating local galleries and businesses that will be showcasing the art work of local and regional artists.

The Art Walks will run through October.

A pocket map that includes the locations of Art Walk events will be available at the participating businesses and at the Old Forge Visitor Information Center prior to the event. Continue reading

Musical program slated for Old Forge Library

The Old Forge Library will host a program, From Ireland to the Adirondacks: Five Generations of Songs and Ballads From the Cleveland Family, on Tuesday, August 23 at 7:30 p.m.

A descendant of Scottish and Irish settlers to the Brant Lake area of the Adirondacks, Colleen Cleveland will perform pieces from her family’s musical repertoire of over 400 songs, as well as stories and ancient ballads from the old country.

This program is free and open to the public and is sponsored by The Friends of the Old Forge Library.

‘The Friends’ award prizes at annual Library Bash

The Old Forge Library Bash annual fundraiser, held Sunday, August 14, drew close to 90 people who enjoyed a variety of hors d’oeuvres and wines that were available for tasting.

The event was organized and hosted by the Friends of the Library.

“A lot of folks showed up and we were very pleased,” said Hazel Dellavia, President of the Friends of the Library.

The big winner of the day was Joni Dyer of Eagle Bay who took home the hand-crocheted Throw by Louisette Lecours, the Hand Painted Wooden Bowls by fellow artist Linda Marcy, and the gift certificate to Sister’s Bistro.

There were additional winners of door prizes.

William Mudge won “Pick the Most Expensive Wine Contest.”

Steven Wick of Old Forge won “Guess the Number of Corks in the Jar Contest”. His guess of 427 was the closest to the 441 corks in the jar.

Gary Lee of Inlet took home the Floral Centerpiece with the Dragonfly Scarf from Mountain Greenery as the last door prize of the day.

Raffle winners who were not present may pick up their prizes at the Old Forge Library during regular library hours or call the library at (315) 369-6008 to arrange for pick-up.

Irish Storyteller performs at the Old Forge Library

Bairbre McCarthy holds the hard cover edition of her book, "The Keeper of the Crock of Gold: Irish Leprechaun Stories." The book was presented to President Obama for his children by the Irish Prime Minister on St. Patrick's Day at the White House

Library Irish Storyteller and author, Bairbre McCarthy, delighted the audience at the Old Forge Library on Tuesday evening, August 9, with Celtic folklore and mythology legends of her native country.

McCarthy who was born and raised in County Clare on the west coast of Ireland, teaches the Irish language, in addition to her storytelling presentations. She has lived in Saratoga Springs for 30 years.

She is author of the book, “The Keeper of the Crock of Gold: Irish Leprechaun Stories,” which was presented to President Obama for his children by the Irish Prime Minister at the White House on St. Patrick’s Day.

She is currently working on a young adult novel about a Celtic mythical folk hero.
