Slumping enrollment numbers forced some tough budget choices in Town of Webb school district

In Ron Smith’s letter of last week, he implied that school budgets are dictated by superintendents. The fact is superintendents work with administrative staff to produce budgets that are proposed to the school board. The board then deliberates, consults and modifies, before finally adopting its own budget.

The final say rests with the voters, of course.

Beyond that clarification, it’s difficult to respond to Ron’s claims of excessive cuts and negative effects on students, since few specifics were offered.  Continue reading

Area instrumental students perform at NYS Music Assoc. Solo Festival

Town of Webb and Inlet Common School band students traveled to Watertown High School to be adjudicated in the New York State School Music Association’s (NYSSMA) Solo Festival on Saturday, April 26th.

At the event, each student had to perform a prepared solo, memorize major scales, and complete sight reading in front of an adjudicator. Thirty-two of the students represented Town of Webb UFSD and three were from Inlet Common School—all are students of Mrs. Emily Herrmann.   Continue reading

Spring Caberet Concert set at Webb school

The Town of Webb School Junior and Senior Bands, under the direction of Instrumental Music Teacher Emily Herrmann, will perform music from around the world at their Spring Cabaret Band Concert on Thursday, May 8 at 7 p.m. in the school gymnasium.

Fifth grade Town of Webb students and fifth and sixth grade band students from the Inlet Common School will be joining the Junior Band for several songs.

“For most of these students, this will be the very first band concert of their musical careers,” said Herrmann.

The Stage Band will be playing a classic Duke Ellington swing chart, music from The Blues Brothers, and a popular Kansas song.

All are invited to come and enjoy an  evening of music with refreshments served at their tables.
