Kiwanis: Tyler Fenton recognized as March Student of the Month

The Kiwanis Club of the Central Adiron-dacks has announced that its Student of the Month for March is Tyler Fenton.

Tyler is the son of William and Madeline Fenton of Old Forge and is a senior at Town of Webb Union Free School.

The Student of the Month is a program initiated by the Kiwanis Club, in cooperation with the Town of Webb School, that recognizes senior students.  Continue reading

Local 4-H member advances in public speaking competition

Thirty-two Herkimer County 4-H members participated in 4-H Public Presentations held at the Herkimer High School on Thursday, March 3rd.

The 4-H members, from all over Herkimer County, took turns giving illustrated talks, demonstrations, or job and college interviews in front of judges who evaluated their presentation skills.  Continue reading

Services set for Beatrice A. McNally, 91

Beatrice A. McNally,91 of Old Forge passed away on Tuesday, March 8, 2016.

She was born on November 10, 1924 in Glens Falls, NY, the oldest of three daughters, to William and Calista (Smith) McNally, Old Forge, NY.

Bea lived with her sister (Sophia McNally Roffe) on Adams Street. She had been employed at various businesses in the Old Forge area for over seventy years. Continue reading

Memorial Mass planned for Therese M. Capone, 72

Therese M. Capone, 72, of Lakeside Terrace Apartments, Old Forge, a native and former resident of Watertown, and the former Sister Peter Marie, of the Sisters of St. Joseph’s Order of Watertown, NY, passed away on Tuesday, March 1, 2016, at Sunset Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Boonville, after a short illness.

She was born on January 25, 1944, a daughter of Peter and Lena Geno Capone.  Continue reading

Mark Hawksley, 57, passes away

Mark Hawksley, 57, of Swannanoa, NC died quietly on Wednes-day, February 17, 2016 after a long illness. He was born Friday, September 12, 1958.

He was the son of the late Clarence Hawksley. He is survived by his mother, Ruth Hawksley; siblings, Carol Faso, Fred Hawksley, Susan Hawksley, Rick Hawksley, and Todd Hawksley; as well as several nieces and nephews.

He graduated from G. Ray Bodley High School in Fulton, NY. He was employed by Northern Ready Mix in NY for over 20 years. He moved to North Carolina in 2014 with friends.

Mark will be missed by his friends and family.

F. Jane Eyre died Friday, March 4, 2016 at St. John’s Home in Rochester, NY. She was born May 16, 1927 in Rochester, NY to Arthur E. Eyre, Sr. and Louise Dezen Eyre.

Janie is survived by her brother, Arthur Eyre and sister-in-law, Annette; her nieces Alison Eyre Albright, Hope Eyre, and Patience (Michael) Rubyor, great-niece Tenley Jane Albright and great-nephews Ross Eyre Albright, Justin Rubyor, and Wyatt Donaldson.

She is also survived by her best friend and constant companion of 82 years, Suzanne Barrett of Rochester, NY and Third Lake, Old Forge.  Continue reading

Local service planned for Julia M. Biehn, 77

Julia Mary Gibson Biehn, of Limekiln Lake, Inlet, passed away on March 1, 2016, in the early afternoon, surrounded by family. Julie was playing tennis when she was stricken, on Saturday, February 27, with a heart attack and lost consciousness. She won the final point.

Julie was born in New Hartford, NY, on August 21, 1938, to Marvin Edward Gibson and Evelyn (Bacile) Gibson.  Continue reading
