Kiwanis Food Kart Day a big success

The Kiwanis Club of the Central Adirondacks’  Food Kart Day on Saturday, July 6, held in support of the Webb Community Food Pantry was highly successful thanks to the generosity of shoppers at Kalil’s Market in Inlet, DiOrio’s Supermarket in Old, Forge, Dan’s Food Mart in Eagle Bay, and Kinney Drugs in Old Forge.

At the end of the day, Kiwanis volunteers collected and transported over three pickup truck loads of food items to the Webb Community Food Pantry located at St. Bartholomew’s Church for distribution as needed. Volunteers also collected over $400 in cash donations. Continue reading

VIEW: Canal Street String Band to perform

The Canal Street String Band will perform at View in Old Forge  at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, July 22nd.

With three voices, 55 strings and a pair of cow bones, The Canal Street String Band puts a new twist on some old American music including fiddle tunes, sea shanties, cowboy songs, canal ditties, mountain music, western swing, and their own original works.

The songs will be performed with a variety of instruments from banjo to fiddle, twin mandolins, string bass, dobro, guitar, octave mandolin, assorted “pocket” instruments, and three-part harmonies.  Continue reading

Sail vessels race despite light air conditions

The Central Adirondack Sailing Association held its second weekend of races of the 2013 season on Fourth Lake on July 13th.

The sailors enjoyed relatively good winds the first race but were challenged to finish the second race due to the winds dying down to almost nothing.

This type of race is affectionately known to sailors as a “drifter.”

Tom B. McCabe with daughter Carey Lorraine and granddaughter Meg Lorraine took advantage of the light winds and finished first in both races. Continue reading

Library hosts Tuesday Night Performance Series

Acoustic musicians Joe Davoli and Nick Piccininni played to a packed house Tuesday, July 16  at the Old Forge Library with over 75 people filling the library hall and listening to a mix of waltzes, swing and bluegrass.

The event was part of the Tuesday evening performances that the library will host throughout the summer.

Upcoming performances include: a “Common Threads: Adirondack Quilts tell their Stories” with Hallie Bond on July 30, “Adirondack Trilogy” with author Tony Holtzman on August 6, “The American Songbook: Jazz Standards” with Elaine Schwart and Roger Bruno on August 13, and “Adirondack Trail of Gold” with author Larry Weill on August 20th.

The Tuesday programs begin at 7:30 p.m. and are sponsored fully or in part by the New York State Council on the Arts.

The Goodsell Museum in Old Forge is hosting a Lectures on the Lawn series on Wednesdays throughout the summer that cover various regional topics.

Featured on July 17 was Peter Nelson who gave a program titled, “The Magic of Surveying.” Presented in a fun and interesting narrative, Nelson demonstrated and offered instruction on the fine art of surveying through the use of fractions and triangles. At one point he was assisted by his wife who appeared on stilts.

Nelson teaches college math and is the author of the Lost Brook Dispatches column that appears in the Adirondack Almanack.

Lectures on the Lawn take place on Wednesdays at 2:30 p.m. on the grounds of the Goodsell Museum and are free of charge. Donations are accepted and appreciated.

The topic of the July 24 lecture will be Lost Ski Areas of the Southern Adirondacks. The Goodsell Museum is located at 2993 State Route 28 across from the Old Forge post office. For more information  call (315) 369-3838.

Service held for John J. Barry III, 38

John Joseph Barry III, 38, of North Buffalo, a contractor, property manager and contributing member of Orchard Park High Schools’ 1991 state championship boys’ volleyball team, died  July 9, 2013 in Roswell Park Cancer Institute following a battle with leukemia.

Born November 1, 1974, John grew up in Orchard Park schools, where he was a three-sport athlete, playing volleyball, basketball, and baseball.

Before his high school athletic career, he spent many summers playing for his father in the Orchard Park Little League.

John went on to graduate from West Virginia University and returned to Buffalo Niagara, moving to North Buffalo, where he started his career as a contractor and property manager. Continue reading

View to host Secret Garden Tour

A Secret Garden Tour of four private and rarely viewed local gardens will be held on Wednesday, July 24th. Those interested in taking part in the guided tour can meet at View at 9:30 a.m. for carpooling.

Participants can pack a lunch and enjoy a presentation by Gary Lee at View’s Eco Gallery following the tour.

The fee is $20 and will take place rain or shine. Tickets can be pre-purchased at View or purchased the day of the event. All proceeds will benefit the landscaping at View.
