New fishing line recycling program begins park-wide

A fishing line recycling container was recently installed on the shore of Fulton Chain of Lakes to encourage the proper disposal of fishing line and hopefully save some Loons and other wildlife from injury or death.

It is located at the Fourth Lake Alger Island State Camp-ground Boat Launch.

The canister, installed by Gary Lee of Inlet, is the first in this area and part of the Fishing Line Recycling Program sponsored by Biodiversity Research Institute’s Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation. Continue reading

Old Forge Library to present 2013 Ad’k Storytelling & Music Festival

Storyteller Bill Smith will again entertain at this weekend’s Adirondack Storytelling & Music Festival in Old Forge.

The Old Forge Library’s Adirondack Storytelling and Music Festival is scheduled to take place on Sunday, July 21 from 12 to 2 p.m. under the tent on the Forge Motel Knoll.

Award-winning musicians Dan Berggren and Roy Hurd will be headlining the event along with popular Adirondack Storytellers Bill Smith and Jeannine Laverty.

Dan Berggren’s roots are firmly in the Adirondacks, where he was raised, but his music has branched out across many borders.

Hearing stories and songs from local friends and neighbors, he has developed a style that captures the spirit of the mountains.

Roy Hurd is one of the best-known singer/songwriters in the Adirondacks.  Continue reading

Inlet’s Arts in Park Craft Fair set Saturday & Sunday, July 20 & 21

Over 60 artists and craftsmen will set up at Arrowhead Park in Inlet on Saturday and Sunday, July 20 and 21 for the 37th Annual Arts in the Park festival.

Among the items for sale will be pottery, quilts, handmade/ hand-embroidered apparel, wrought iron, floral designs, jewelry, wall hangings, sand art, metal products, wooden items, furniture, photography, bird houses, leather items, fishing lures, redwood signs, and lawn ornaments.

Vendors come from all over New York state, as well as Connecticut, Vermont and Canada, and many will be demonstrating their crafts at their booths.  Continue reading

Digital conversion event

Strand: 90th Anniversary Celebration set July 25th

The Strand 90th Anniversary Gala and fundraising celebration will take place on Thursday, July 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. on the Forge Knoll.

The event will include a silent and live auction, cocktails and food and live entertainment by Al Nathan and Joe Bolton.

Attendees will be able to have a commemorative photo next to Cary Grant’s Jaguar convertible that will be on display during the event.

Following cocktails, there will be a video presentation at the Strand highlighting its 90 year history, followed by a champagne toast.

Tickets for the entire event are $50 per person and can be purchased at the Old Forge Information Center, by calling CAP-21 at (315)369-3353 or online at www.cap-21.org.

The event is sponsored by CAP-21 and the Central Adirondack Association.

Chicken BBQ to benefit the Strand

North Woods Lodge F&AM 849 and Dewey Old Forge Chapter #449 OES will be hosting a chicken barbeque in the parking lot of the Strand Theatre in Old Forge on Saturday, July 20 from noon until the food is gone.

The barbeque will cost $12 per person and will include a half chicken, baked beans, potato salad, roll, dessert, and a drink.

Pre-orders can be made by contacting Jan Park or by leaving a message at 369-6889.

All proceeds, following expenses, will be donated to the Save the Strand project.

Inlet program to highlight past & present life in Inlet, July 24

The Inlet Historical Society will present a continuation of its “Inlet Then and Now” program on Wednesday, July 24 at 7 p.m.

Charles Herr, who presented the the first part of the program in June, will continue his discussion of the development of the early Village of Inlet.

He will also discuss the churches, fire department and other hotels and businesses at the head of Fourth Lake and the surrounding Seventh and Limekiln Lakes. Continue reading

Saturday, July 20th: Mountainman Outdoor Supply Co. to host SUP Festival, Competition

Mountainman Outdoor Supply Company will host the 2nd Annual New York SUP Festival on Saturday, July 20 at the Old Forge lakefront and at Mountainman Outdoor Supply Company on Route 28 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The event will include races, free demos, clinics and instruction on stand up paddleboards and is designed to introduce the public to the enjoyment of stand up paddleboarding as a fitness opportunity.

SUP is a simple, easy to learn watersport that offers a full body workout.

An SUP is essentially an oversized surfboard that is specifically designed for use on either flatwater or surf.  Continue reading
