Thunder in Forge: Annual motorcyle event to honor Wounded Warriors

Professional trik biker, Reality Racing Ronnnie, is scheduled to perform both days of this year's Thunder in Old Forge.

Thunder in Old Forge, the annual motorcycle gathering, is scheduled for Friday, June 1, from noon to 7 p.m. and Saturday, June 2, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the George T. Hiltebrant Recreation Center on North Street.

The event is sponsored by the Central Adirondack Association (CAA) and the Town of Webb.

Ed Booton, co-chairman of the event with Chip Kiefer, said, “The 10th Mountain Division in Watertown, which is basically our home base, is doing a large portion of the fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq and we are offering free admission to this event to anyone who comes in uniform or with a current Military ID, including their family.”

This year the money raised through charitable donations and a raffle for a an overnight stay at a local motel, will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project and will go directly to the American Legion Post 893 in Old Forge to host four to five families from Fort Drum for a weekend in Old Forge. First Friday Art Walks get underway June 1st in Old Forge

The first of the seasonal series of First Friday Art Walks in Old Forge will take place on June 1 from 5 to 8 p.m. All are invited to visit participating local galleries and businesses that will be showcasing the art work of local and regional artists.

The Art Walks will run through October.

A pocket map that includes the locations of Art Walk events will be available at the participating businesses and at the Old Forge Visitor Information Center prior to the event.

Old Forge: Adirondack Camp & Home Show returning June 8, 9, 10

The 4th annual Adirondack Camp & Home Show presented by Brooker’s Hardware & Lumber, will be held at the George T. Hiltebrant Recreation Center in Old Forge on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 8, 9, and 10th.

The hours are Friday from Noon-8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Admission and parking are free.

More than 40 manufacturers will showcase their home improvement and beautification products, and Instructional Workshops, Seminars and Demonstrations will be available all weekend. Continue reading

Health Center: Important to avoid unnecessary steps backward

I find it very sad that we are losing Dr Tom Socash to another area and that Dr Mark Webster is nearing his well deserved retirement.

Both have provided excellent medical care to our residents and visitors for many years.

They will be greatly missed.

As a Paramedic with 50 years prehospital care experience with Old Forge Ambulance, past town board member of 20 years and a past Town of Webb Health Center Fund president, I would like to offer some of my concerns about the proposed takeover of the Town of Webb Health Center by St. Elizabeth Hospital.

St. Elizabeth Hospital is an excellent medical provider and has provided excellent care to me and my family members.

I recently attended the informational meeting about the proposed takeover of the Town of Webb Health Center by St. Elizabeth’s Hospital and came away with the following concerns:

Adirondack Bank designates charities for upcoming golf classic

Dragonfly Cottage & Marketplace abuzz with vintage treasures, art

Dragonfly Cottage and Vintage Marketplace, a new shop at 2987 Main Street in Old Forge will open its doors on Friday, May 25 and will feature a number of vendors offering antiques, art, vintage treasures, and handmade gifts.

The proprietor, Tina Timm Snow, whose re-purposed vintage items will be among the vendor articles on display throughout the first and second floors, said that the shop’s name reflects her love of dragonflies and “everything whimsical.”

She has two dollhouse factory studios on the second floor, which will be her ongoing project during slower periods, she said, adding that visitors will be able to watch as the construction unfolds over the summer. Continue reading
