Letter to the Editor- Promise: Webb can do more, should do more in next two years

To the Editor:

I, Richard Risley, am a candidate for Town of Webb Supervisor and will appear at the bottom of the ballot on the “Have a Voice” independent line.

It is with pleasure that I have served two 4-year terms as your Town Councilman—terms that have encompassed 12 years of important Town of Webb issues.

Among those were ongoing concerns such as the TOBIE path, which includes the Eagle Bay Welcome Center; the East Side sewer pump station; Lock & Dam; and the navigation dock replacements.

Also the replacement of the North Street Pavilion and the Health Center roof.

As your Supervisor, I will improve local heath care, as the current model does not meet community needs.

The current staff is great, as are the doctors.

But today’s climate calls for improvement. Continue reading

Letter to the Editor- No doubt: Taxpayers win with new jail that’s built on schedule

To the Editor:

The New York State Commission on Corrections has closed our jail effective May 16, 2006.

We are allowed to stay open with a variance and a commitment to build a new facility.

Due to state regulations we have been able to house about 30–32 inmates in our jail.

That has left Herkimer County boarding out to other counties an average of 25 inmates with a high of up to 50 inmates. This has cost taxpayers approximately $2.9 million dollars over the last three years with nothing to show for these expenditures.

The Commission has made it clear that boarding out is not a permanent solution. Continue reading

Letter to the Editor- Patrick Russell: He works for us, not those outside our district

To the Editor:

For years Patrick Russell has dedicated himself to serving the Town of Webb.

He has found ways to limit or lower taxes for Webb residents.

He has helped streamline the county labor force to reduce payroll.

He remains a roadblock to proposals that would divert more northern county resources to the southern county.

He has stood between us and a bad bed-tax deal. Continue reading

Letter to the Editor: Justice Venetz praised for handling of court

Several years ago, I began my career as a volunteer intern at the Town of Webb court under Judge Patrick Venetz. Now an established attorney in Syracuse, I felt a desire to share some of my thoughts on Judge Venetz as he prepares for the upcoming Town Justice election.

What always struck me while working with Pat was the genuine concern he felt for every case that came in front of him.

Whether it be a local teenager making a silly mistake or a vacationer from Long Island, Pat always had the individual leave the court room with a clear understanding of the process. Continue reading

Letter to the Editor: Mary Brophy Moore will make truly outstanding board member

To the Editor:

I have seen Mary Brophy Moore’s ability to promote tourism, manage a company, and to develop and maintain a budget in the private sector, and I am confident that she can do the same as a Councilwoman for the Town of Webb.

The Town of Webb is a unique community. We are a geographically isolated population and therefore must be relatively self sufficient in maintaining the quality of life for our community members.

This requires an effort to maintain and develop infrastructure, recreational facilities, and services. Continue reading

Letter to the Editor – Candidate deCamp: Abundance of challenges facing our communities

To the Editor:

I am a registered independent, and as such I could not run in the primary elections. So my official candidacy commenced on July 21, 2011.

Since then I have spent a great deal of time learning why the TOW is where it is, how it got there, what challenges we face and how they affect the livelihood of our communities.

In 2008 property taxes and the revaluation was huge! Ultimately the decision resulted in the rejection of the revaluation. 2012 will bring this issue right back on everyone’s table.

I am willing and able to tackle this issue, locally and on the county level, to reach the solution that is in the best interest of the residents and business owners within the TOW.
