This election year, ya gotta believe- and participate by Colin Criss

This election year, ya gotta believe—and participate

Voting puts the ‘you’ in U.S.A.

The United States has led the world for over a century as its foremost industrialized democracy, and most Americans—who look upon the distinction with pride—expect it to stay that way well into the future.

Recently, however, interest in our government has waned both nationally and locally, and certainly to our nation’s detriment.

I know from firsthand local encounters that too many view our government as someone else’s business.

They are content to sit back and deal with daily life in our small community.

People who consider themselves politically active generally try to make it to the voting booth, but wouldn’t sweat missing a vote much more than they would the morning weather report. There will be other chances, they say, and besides, my vote most likely won’t swing the results. Continue reading

Letter to the Editor: Jack Graham will serve Town of Webb well on judicial bench

Dear Town of Webb Voters:

November 8th is Election Day, and this is a very important year for your community. You will be casting ballots for people you feel will do the best job in the position for which they are running.

It is not a popularity contest, an acknowledgement of anyone’s wealth—if they happen to own a business—or of anyone’s lifestyle.

In any local government you want and need people who are honest and trustworthy, who will treat you, the local citizens, and visitors to our area with respect and dignity.

You want to choose someone who best represents the very best your town has to offer. I believe my dad, John “Jack” Graham, is the best choice for Webb Town Justice.

If I could vote in the Town of Webb, I would vote for him— and not because he is my father. Continue reading

Letter to the Editor: Bill Faro a straight shoorter

To the Editor:

I have known Councilman Bill Faro for at least 15 years and have worked with him on the Inlet Ambulance for about 7 years.

I know Bill to be an honest and straight-shooting person. He has served on the Town Board in the past with dignity, and to the best of my knowledge, has always had the best interest of the

Town of Inlet first and foremost in his decisions on the Board.

Respectfully,

Robert Gordon, Inlet

Talkin’ Code with Andrew Getty

Two Misunderstood Realities

Two common issues that keep coming up are the idea that boathouses are prohibited and confusion as to the roof snow-load design requirements. Boathouses are regulated by local Town law and by the Adirondack Park Agency [APA].

Roof snow-load design requirements are regulated under the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code [The Uniform Code].

First, boathouses are NOT prohibited either by the Town of Webb or the APA. Continue reading

Well… it’s here!

Sectionals are officially underway. And while the regular season grind may be like a long work-year on the farm, the playoffs are a bit more like harvesting season.

That is, time to reap the rewards for all of your tireless efforts. If that’s the case, the boy’s varsity soccer team just brought in a bumper crop, at least in their quarterfinal matchup against Madison.

Thanks to a winning season, the guys earned a bye, followed by a home game on Friday, October 28 against the Blue Devils, whose 4-8 record suggested that Old Forge might have an easy time of it. Continue reading

Knife-pilfering black bear adds mystery to western elk hunt

Cow Elk down- now the work begins

I’m back in the Adirondacks again after a great week-long Elk hunting trip to Carbondale, Colorado. There were a limited number of Mule Deer tags this year so none of our party got one.

With the number of Mule Deer we saw this year and an easy winter there should be more tags next year.

We saw well over one hundred deer during our hunt. I saw over twenty one day and then the next day I only saw one buck.

That day I moved several deer to others in our party but that was the only buck. On the third day of our hunt on Fender Ranch we saw several Mule Deer, two nice bucks just off the property, and one spike bull Elk. Continue reading

Letter to the Editor- Vote Klosner: We need to keep Herkimer County’s Justice seat

To the Editor:

I value and support the principles of the Republican Party.

However, I also understand there are, on occasion, matters which cross party lines and call for a united effort. We in Herkimer County face such a matter now.

The Republican Party in the Fifth Judicial District has recently endorsed Scott Klosner, our candidate for Supreme Court Justice. Continue reading
