Webb Student Strands: A tangle of news and notes reported by Town of Webb School students

An open letter from an 8th grade class president

On behalf of my constituents:

Could Albany please revisit test calendar? To whom it may concern at the New York State Education Department in Albany: I am Casey Hamlin, a fourteen-year-old student from Old Forge, NY attending Town of Webb Union Free School, a small school of about 300 students in Upstate NY.

As you may be well aware, our New York State Test dates have been changed, directly coinciding with our spring break.

Because of your department’s lack of consideration for these breaks, my family had to change our reservations, and pay the toll that comes with changing them. Continue reading

Herkimer County managing despite late payments from Albany

The State of New York owes Herkimer County $6.447 million, and Herkimer County Legislator Patrick Russell believes reimbursement from the State is taking way too long.

Luckily, according to Herkimer County Administrator James W. Wallace, Jr., Herkimer County is very fortunate.

“In Herkimer County we are very solid with our reserves, we haven’t had to do any short term borrowing yet like other counties have,” he said.

According to Wallace, Herkimer County is owed $4.9 million from Social Services programs, and $1,334,168 in reimbursements towards public health programs, programs for the physically handicapped, and the Office for the Aging. Continue reading

HASCA says thank you for bartender support

HASCA would like to thank everyone who supported  Natalie Tickner and myself as guest bartenders at Van Auken’s Inne on Sunday, September 18. Your generosity was overwhelming. All tips, totalling $316, were donated to HASCA.

Thanks also to Joan, Mary and Jessica for allowing us the use of their bar for our benefit.

These funds will help HASCA continue its mission to assist community members in their daily lives, thus allowing them to live in their own homes.

Nancy Venetz

President, HASCA Board

Thendara posts welcome sign on Route 28

A sign welcoming visitors to the community of Thendara was put into place on Wednesday, September 28 on Route 28, just north of Adiron-dack Tall Timber Log Homes.

The commissioning of the sign was suggested a few years ago by the Thendara History Group. A committee, headed by Louise Watson, decided that the proposed sign should be of similar style to those welcoming folks to the communities of White Lake, Otter Lake, Old Forge, Eagle Bay and Inlet.

Research by the group uncovered plans for a sign for Thendara that was part of a 2005 sign grant that was never completed, according to Gail Murray. Funding for the sign was made possible by the grant.

The sign was designed by Rob Imundo of Rage Graphics.

Letter to the Editor: Thanks, Carol Hansen, for your many years of service to Old Forge Library

Dear Editor:

I must add my own thanks to Carol Hansen for her service to the Old Forge Library and the Town of Webb. I’m sorry I couldn’t be there for the 40th year celebration, but I’m sure everyone gave Carol the warm regards she deserves.

When I was serving on the tri-county Mid-York Library System board as a representative of Herkimer County, the System administration was able to distribute library construction funds from the State of New York. Continue reading
