Card of thanks

I would like to thank the lady who found my 12-year-old dog, Dot, on Wednesday, September 21 while she was hiking on the Middle Settlement Trail.

Dot had been missing from my Okara Lakes home since Monday. I was so excited to have her back that I didn’t even get her rescuer’s name, but I would like her to know how grateful I am.

Thanks also to everyone who took the time to help search for Dot.

Marie Maier, Okara Lakes

Letter to the Editor– Call the Sheriff: Ask for specifics on Herkimer County’s proposed new jail

To the Editor:

For a long time we’ve been deluged with the words, “dilapidated, deteriorating, unfit for use” when our elected officials talk about the county jail.

They assure us that conditions are so dire that the only solution is abandonment and new construction.

In last Sunday’s OD, the Sheriff, the Legislature and the SCOC all lined up again to tell us how bad things are at the jail.

Don’t they see how self-condemning, how self incriminating such statements are? Continue reading

A meeting of the Webb Property Owners Assoc-iation was held on Saturday, September 24 at North Woods Inn. A variety of subjects were discussed.

There was extensive discussion regarding improvements to the local health care system.

The possibility of being declared a Health Professional Shortage Area was proposed, which if obtained would help with expenses.

County Legislator Patrick Russell was in attendance and spoke to the members about issues concerning a new county jail.

The operating expenses for a separate jail versus sharing the facilities of the existing jail is a concern for members and needs to be further explored. Continue reading

Morgan Gardner wins two equestrian medals

Morgn Gardner with her horse Willy

Nine-year-old Morgan Gardner, granddaughter of Jon and Kathy Gardner of Old Forge, competed in the Equestrian Special Olympics on Saturday, September 10.

The event was sponsored by Hillrise Equestrian Center and hosted at Lehmen’s Farms of Pittsford, NY.

Morgan took first and second place bringing home both a gold and silver medal for her performances.

This was Morgan’s third year of competing in the Olympics, and also her third year of winning the gold and silver medals.

Morgan said her favorite part of the day was her horse, Willy.

Morgan was diagnosed with Smith-Lemli-Opitz Syndrome in 2001. The syndrome causes growth delays both mentally and physically.

As one of Morgan’s therapies she participates in Equestrian Therapy, which has been proven to support and improve muscular strength, and other physical and mental struggles children with special needs may have.

Morgan has been riding horses and participating in this program since she was five years old.

Her family said they are already looking forward to next year’s competition.

Adirondack Scenic Railroad welcoming riders for foliage trips

Linda Ellison, operations manager at the Adirondack Scenic Railroad in Thendara, reported that the railroad had a good summer—and so far, a good fall—with plenty of passengers riding the rails from Utica Station or enjoying one of their many scenic specialty trips.

She said the “Paddle Down the Moose River” trips held in partnership with Tickner’s Moose River Canoes in the summer and fall, have been a top ticket seller.

“We’ve been doing it for years, and it’s one of our strongest train trips. Where else can you canoe down the river and come back by train?” Ellison said.

“We start getting phone calls in the winter for reservations for the canoe and kayak trips,” she added.

The Fall Foliage trips always draw a lot of passengers, she said, with three trips daily on Wednesday through Sunday.

Al Heywood of Remsen, an Adirondack Scenic Railroad board member who also serves as conductor for the Utica and Thendara runs, agreed that the season is going well. Continue reading
