IMG_2710A book signing event to celebrate the recent release of Inlet resident Letty Haynes’ latest book, Memories of Inlet Common School, will be held at the Inlet Public Library on Friday, May 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The book highlights the history of the Inlet Common School from the day of its inception in the first decade of the 1900’s to present.

Though there is some uncertainty as to the actual year of the school’s start-up (a plaque in front of the school proclaims it was built in 1906, however conflicting evidence shows that it was operating in 1903, or as early as the fall of 1901) the Inlet Common School remains true to its beginnings as a one-room schoolhouse.

Haynes, who taught at the school for 20 years, chronicles the history of the unique school through pictures and personal reminisces.

Memories of Inlet Common School is the second book authored by Haynes. Her book, Memories of Inlet, was published in 2005 through North Country Books.

All are welcome to the book signing. Refreshments will be served.

Memories of Inlet Common School will soon be available for purchase at area bookstores, including The Adirondack Reader of Inlet.

Letter to the Editor: Animals deserve responsible care

Dear Editor,

It saddens me when anyone has so little respect for life as was expressed in Mrs. Lucky’s article of January 12.

One of the main things I tried to impress on my students when I was teaching, was that ALL life is precious, no matter how trivial it may seem to us, and it should not be wasted needlessly.

More and more are scientists discovering how many human traits animals have. They communicate, experience joy and sadness, (as expressed when a co-pet dies), and pain.

How can anyone not empathize when a creature is brought into captivity and allowed, through neglect, to die a miserable death? Continue reading

WPOA membership discusses issues by Letty Haynes, President

A meeting of the Webb Property Owners Assoc-iation was held on Saturday, September 24 at North Woods Inn. A variety of subjects were discussed.

There was extensive discussion regarding improvements to the local health care system.

The possibility of being declared a Health Professional Shortage Area was proposed, which if obtained would help with expenses.

County Legislator Patrick Russell was in attendance and spoke to the members about issues concerning a new county jail.

The operating expenses for a separate jail versus sharing the facilities of the existing jail is a concern for members and needs to be further explored. Continue reading

Letty Haynes elected new WPOA president

Letty Haynes, a Fourth Lake resident of Old Forge, was elected to be the Webb Property Owners (WPOA) new president for the upcoming year, with a vote cast by the group’s directors at its annual meeting held on Friday, July 29 at North Woods Inn.

WPOA vice president Don Dew said that among Letty’s obvious attributes are her being a woman,a year-round resident, and a person not from Big Moose, which is not unimportant, according to Dew, since at times some have perceived WPOA’s leadership as being disproportionately Big Moose.

But Letty will bring much more to the post than that, according to long-time friend Pat Ellis, who serves as WPOA treasurer.

“I have known Letty for about 25 years, and she is one of the nicest people I have ever known. She is a good friend and a good listener. She’s a leader. She has always been very involved in our community. She is active with the Inlet Historical Society and the Inlet Library. You name it, she’s involved. And that’s besides being a pretty good bridge player. Just a wonderful lady,” Ellis said.

Letty’s son Russ has also been an active WPOA member, according to Don Dew.

Others elected on the slate of officers that included Letty and Pat Ellis are vice presidents Don Dew and Leslie Knox Jr., and Robert A. McCoy, secretary.
