Beta Sigma Phi installs officers

The members of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority held their opening gathering at the Banquet Hall of the Moose River House on Monday, September 12. Dinner was served by Stuart deCamp and Jimmie Ortiz.

Following dinner, the installation of officers for 2011–2012 took place. Officers are: Penny Smedley, president; Izzie Worthen, vice-president; Hazel Dellavia, extension officer; Patti Delano, recording secretary; Beverly Burnap, corresponding secretary; and Joan Ward, treasurer.

Old Forge Fire Dept. announces winning parade entries

Above and Below: Members of the Old Forge Fire Department led the Firefighters Drill School Parade north on Main Street last Saturday

Fire personnel from around the state came to Old Forge to take part in the 45th Annual Firefighters Drill School last weekend.

The weekend included classroom and outdoor instruction, a memorial service in recognition of the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy, and a firefighters parade up Main Street.

Following the parade, trophies were awarded to fire companies in the following categories:

Best Appearing Department with Music: Brighton Fire Department. Best Appearing Department without Music: 1st – Fuller Road, 2nd – Chatham, 3rd – Shaker Road, Loudonville. Best Appearing Saluting Officer: Verona. Continue reading

Falling Leaves Craft Show returns Saturday, Oct. 1st

The Falling Leaves Craft Show, hosted by Niccolls Memorial Church Women’s Fellowship, returns to the Town of Webb Building on Park Avenue on Saturday, October 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A variety of vendors will be on-hand to sell their handmade works. Items available for sale include woven and hand-sewn goods, pottery, clothing, jams and jellies, woodcarvings, and jewelry.

The ever-popular Cookie Walk will continue throughout the day and lunch will be available on-site.

Admission is $2 and children are admitted free. Proceeds of the show will benefit Hope House of Utica.

A final Falling Leaves Craft Show will be held Saturday, October 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will benefit the Town of Webb Historical Association and the Old Forge Ballet Company.

Saturday, September 4th Sign Up: Record participation in sight, but more needed for ‘One Square Mile’

One Square Mile of Hope is set to take place in Inlet’s Arrowhead Park on Saturday, September 24, rain or shine.

According to Inlet Tourism Director, Adele Burnett, as of midnight September 21, over 1,400 canoes, kayaks, and guide boats have registered to help break the World Record for Largest Floating Raft.

While the number of boats already registered may seem large, the current record to break is 1,619 and was set on June 5, 2010 in Pittsburgh, PA.

Tickets for the event benefit Susan G. Komen for the cure and are available online until midnight on Friday, September 23.

The fee is $25 with each extra passenger costing an additional $10. Continue reading

Correction

In last week’s story on the 29th Annual Canoe Classic, the overall winners in the Open Touring Class were listed incorrectly.

The overall Open Tour winners were Joanne Maly, Jim Williams, Rich Nelson, and Brian Schoen.

The paddlers’ time on day one was 6:14:00; on day two, 4:48:53; and on day three, 3:20:05 for a three-day total of 14:22:58.

Big Moose Chapel Plans

Foliage service

Guest minister Reverend Vernon Lee will lead a Fall Foliage Service at the Big Moose Community Chapel on Sunday, September 25 at 10 a.m. All are invited to enjoy coffee and cookies following the service.

The chapel’s annual Christmas Candlelight Service will be held on Sunday, December 18 at 4 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Letter to the Editor: I keep hearing about all this hate, but so far have yet to witness any

A Letter of Response to Ken Thibado:

“Extreme” “Hate Filled” “Homophobic”… Wow.

I again read with wonder and awe an article written by Ken Thibado where he attempts to somehow compare the XFL with the “hate filled” FOX News Network and the extremist Tea Party.

I wonder how he has come to the point in his life where he hates a news organization for telling the truth, and I am in awe that he may actually believe what he is saying.

Let’s talk for a moment about the “extremism” of the Tea Party.

While I don’t consider myself a Tea Party member, I have attended several of their rallies in an attempt to understand their view and I must say I concur with most of their beliefs.

Considering the path which our Federal and State governments have been taking the past several years with spending, taxation and regulation, someone had to speak up.

Where does the “extremism” come in?

Is it “extreme” to want a smaller, more efficient and responsive government? Continue reading
