Saturday, September 4th Sign Up: Record participation in sight, but more needed for ‘One Square Mile’

One Square Mile of Hope is set to take place in Inlet’s Arrowhead Park on Saturday, September 24, rain or shine.

According to Inlet Tourism Director, Adele Burnett, as of midnight September 21, over 1,400 canoes, kayaks, and guide boats have registered to help break the World Record for Largest Floating Raft.

While the number of boats already registered may seem large, the current record to break is 1,619 and was set on June 5, 2010 in Pittsburgh, PA.

Tickets for the event benefit Susan G. Komen for the cure and are available online until midnight on Friday, September 23.

The fee is $25 with each extra passenger costing an additional $10.

Registration can also be done in person now through the morning of the event.

Saturday’s event begins with registration and packet pick-up in Arrowhead Park between 7  and 10:30 a.m.

At 9:30 a.m. Robin Dwyer, pastor of the Church of the Lakes in Inlet, will lead an Ecumenical Service of Healing and Remem-brance for those attending the One Square Mile of Hope event.

Following the service at 10:30 a.m., participants may begin launching their boats, and by noon, paddles will come up and the count will be official.

Following the world record attempt, there will be music and activities in Arrowhead Park until 5 p.m. when the event will conclude with an evening paddle.

Those wishing to register for the event online may do so by going to www.onesquaremileofhope.com.

Tickets can also be purchased in person at the following locations: the Old Forge Information Center, the Inlet Information Office, Frisky Otter Tours, and The Boathouse Camp and Home.
