Auction Coming Together for Library Bash to be Held Sunday, Aug. 14th

The Friends of the Old Forge Library will host the annual Library Bash on Sunday, August 14 and raffle items are currently on display at the library. The Bash will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. and will feature various contests, hors d’ oeuvres, a wine tasting, door prizes, and a free wine glass.

Some of the items that have been donated to this year’s event include: a Quilted Table Runner from the Pointed Pine Quilters, a child’s quilt from Claire Oehler, a hand-woven Cotton Table Runner by Margo Boylan, Quilted Fabric Art from Sue Monaghan, and a Hand Crocheted Throw donated by Louisette Lecours.

Also, an Adirondack Detective Series basket from John and Marge Briant, a Birch and Twig Mirror donated by Maureen Van Slyke, a knife-carved Chickadee from Bob Zimmerman, a hand-crocheted throw donated by Louisette Lecours;

A hand-crafted freshwater Pearl necklace from Pete Ferris, five sets of hand-crafted earrings from Suzanne Firsching, a handmade purse donated by Sharon Petrides and a hand-woven scarf from Mary Anne Ransom.

Other items include at photograph donated by Gary Lee titled “Bald Eagle on My Pond 2011”, a photograph from Kathy Riehle titled “Sunset on Durant”, as well as a basket of Adirondack books donated by the Old Forge Hardware.

Gift certificates donated from area businesses Thendara Golf Club, Enchanted Forest Water Safari, The Strand Theatre, Mountainman Outdoor Supply Co., and Sister’s Bistro will be raffled off, as well as a gift certificate and curly maple box donated by Debra Burrington-Mills of Gallery 3040.

Two-week Theatre & Performing Arts Workshop to Begin August 1

Khoros Performing Arts Company for Kids, in conjunction with View and the Old Forge Library, will be offering a two week theatre and performing arts workshop for children ages 8 to 12 in the first two weeks of August.  Continue reading

Postmark Cancellation Event to Commemorate Mail Boat Service

In commemoration of the 110th anniversary of mail boat service on the Fulton Chain of Lakes, the Old Forge Post Office will issue a special postmark cancellation event on Monday, July 25.

Postal personnel will set up a temporary post office under a tent at the Old Forge Lake Cruises boat dock, from noon to 3 p.m. on July 25.

The postal clerk will apply the postmark to any item bearing first-class postage.

The Town of Webb Historical Association will offer a special envelope and post card stamp “cache” with a special hand cancellation.  Continue reading

Walt Throne inducted to Model Aeronautic Hall

Walt Throne, owner of Walt’s Hobby, Inc. of Syracuse, was inducted into the Academy of Model Aeronautics National Hall of Fame on July 16.

The honor, which includes an award plaque, is based upon extraordinary service and contributions to the model hobby community and industry.

Throne was presented his award at the 75th Anniversary of the organization in Muncie, Indiana. Continue reading

North Street Airport, Old Forge Mountain R/C Modelers to host Fly-In on July 30

The Mountain R/C Modelers of Old Forge will hold its 10th Annual Fly-In and Fun-Fly at the airfield on North Street in Old Forge on Saturday, July 30 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The highlight of this radio-controlled model plane event, which draws pilots from all over the East, will be an air show at 1 p.m.

The public is invited to bring a chair and enjoy a day with friends, family and our local radio-controlled flying community.

Admission is free, and food and drinks will be available for purchase on-site. More information is available by calling Walt Throne at (315) 369-6329.

Col. Patrick Gooley Promoted to Group Commander

Colonel Patrick J. Gooley, son of Don Gooley, Superintendent of the Town of Webb Union Free School District, was recently promoted to Group Commander of the 375th Communications Group at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois.

Throughout his military career, Colonel Gooley has received numerous awards and recognitions from the United States Military including the Bronze Star Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Air Force Commendation Medal, along with the Air Force Achievement Medal.

Colonel Gooley has served as the Deputy Director of Network Services Headquarters Defense Information Systems Agency of Fort Meade, MD.  Continue reading

View welcomes Dawn Lenci to staff

Dawn Lenci of Thendara, is the newest employee at View, the new arts center of Old Forge.

The Old Forge native started her new job as Financial Manager on Wednesday, July 13.

Dawn had previously been employed for 20 years in the business office of the Adirondack League Club.

“It’s great,” she said of her new position. “People are wonderful and everything is beautiful.  I’m loving it.” Continue reading
