Gov. Cuomo waives APA, DEC permit requirements

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced Wednesday that the Adirondack Park Agency (APA) and the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) are waiving permitting requirements for emergency repairs as result of Hurricane Irene, allowing community leaders and private landowners to directly respond to the need for waterfront, road and bridge stabilization, and emergency repairs.

“Government needs to do all it can to help devastated communities and homeowners get back on their feet and sometimes that means getting out of the way and allowing for quick rebuilding and restoration,” Governor Cuomo said.

Local officials as well as individual property owners should take the urgent and immediate steps to stabilize and repair property, roads and bridges without consultation with the APA, according to Cuomo.

The APA will be available to confirm emergency advice for officials or individuals in writing when requested.

Hurricane Irene has caused widespread damage to public and private property and much of the replacement and repair will take place in environmentally sensitive areas such as coastal erosion areas, protected waterways, and wetlands. Permitting for construction and repair projects in these areas is suspended, Governor Cuomo said.

DEC reporting rough Adirondack trails, particularly toward High Peaks

Western Adirondacks fared much better after Irene; campgrounds expected to stay open

Unsafe conditions will remain in much of the backcountry of the Adirondacks’ High Peaks region through Labor Day Weekend and beyond, according to a warning issued Thursday by the New York State Department of Environ-mental Conservation (DEC), as a result of Hurricane Irene. Several trail areas are closed or inaccessible due to storm damage that involved flooding, bridge wash-outs, trail wash-outs and blow down of trees and other debris. Areas in the Western Adirondacks are reported in fairly good condition though some flooding and blowdown can be expected, according to DEC. Most DEC campgrounds in the Adirondacks are expected to be open for Labor Day Weekend with many available sites, DEC said. “We encourage the public to check the DEC website for current trail conditions and campground closures before planning their travels this coming holiday weekend,” said DEC Commissioner Joe Martens. Moose River Plains Adirondack League Club lends hand to NYS DEC with road repair project

Rock Dam Road Repair

The Adirondack League Club is assisting the New York State Department of Environ-mental Conservation in the repair of Rock Dam Road in the Moose River Plains.

Currently, there are two main entrances for the Moose River Plains Road, one near Inlet off of Limekiln Road, and the other at the Wakely Dam Recreational Area located at the end of Cedar River Road.

Rock Dam Road is considered a main side road that can be found branching off the side of Moose River Plains Road near Otter Brook Road and Indian Lake Road.

The road, which was washed out in places this spring, has been closed to traffic this summer.

Due to a lack of New York State funds as a result of the budget crisis, repairs to the Rock Dam Road have not been made. Continue reading

Woodgate: Meeting set to discuss driver safety on revamped Route 28

Anyone with concerns about the newly rebuilt stretch of Route 28 that runs through Woodgate is invited to attend a meeting to be held on Saturday, September 3 at 1 p.m., at the White Otter Fish and Game Club in Woodgate, said Don Olney, chairman of the Safe and Sane Drivers Committee.

When the stretch of road was refurbished recently, the driving situation was made less safe, according to Olney.

“Things didn’t come around the way they should have with that road design, and the finished product has made for less-safe driving,” he said.

According to Olney, driver visibility has been diminished near the Woodgate corners, and benefits to businesses along Route 28 have not come to fruition.

“This situation affects everyone that drives the road, whether or not they happen to be resident,” he said.

Olney said he hopes the September 3rd meeting will help people organize and bring about changes, including a reduction in speed limit.

“This might be the first of many meetings,” he said.
