Return of prized possession has its rewards

During all the excitement of last February’s Winter Carnival at McCauley Mountain, Carnival King Deke Morrison misplaced his treasured 1980 Winter Olympics ski hat.

The hat had great sentimental value to Morrison as he wore it while starting the Women’s Alpine Events at the Lake Placid Olympics, as well as many Polar Bear Ski Team races.

He wrote a letter to The Weekly Adirondack, asking Carnival-goers for assistance in finding it.

The day the letter was published, Scott Gaffney, a Town of Webb employee, called to say that his son Anthony had found the hat.

The outdoor party, organized by Laura Lester and her mother, Deb Barry, was held in memory of Kirsty, in support of her namesake culinary scholarship and the beautification of Eagle Bay, one of her pet projects.

Party-goers enjoyed Kirsty’s signature appetizers and beverages as they traded Kirsty stories.

The party was beautifully decorated by Kate Russell of Mountain Greenery and Lori Zellweger of Wilderness Interiors, who along with Kirsten Down of Adirondack Accents  donated a variety of items for a gift basket raffle. A handmade quilt was also raffled and all ticket sales were directed to the scholarship/beautification fund.

Lester, who modeled the party after similar end-of-summer gatherings she shared with her great friend, said she plans on making this an annual event.

Lock and Dam rehabilitation project completed ahead of schedule

Town of Webb Supervisor Ted Riehle has announced that rehabilitative work at Lock and Dam, which was expected to wrap up by Labor Day, was completed on Tuesday, August 20 by Jablonski Excavating, Inc.

“As of Tuesday the water level was back to normal and the water was flowing over the spillway. Today (August 21) they are backing out and cleaning up the site. The project is finished ahead of schedule,” Riehle said.

The construction project, which began on July 8, was monitored along the way by engineers from Clough Harbour & Associates who were on-site August 21 to perform an inspection.

“They were happy with everything they have seen. Things went well and everything is back in service,” Riehle said.

During the rehabilitative process, Jablonski created a diversion structure on the railroad side of Lock N Dam in order to divert the river. Once the river was diverted, construction began on the spillway itself.

Sheet piles were driven in front of the structure, and the frame’s structure was rebuilt. When the process was completed the diversion structure was reversed.
