Fulton Chain of Lakes Assn. updates local boat statistics in recent survey

Six times during the past 25 years the Fulton Chain of Lakes Association (FCLA) has conducted a survey of the number of various kinds of boats there are on the Fulton Chain of Lakes from Old Forge Pond to Fifth Lake.

The shoreline is divided up and board members volunteer to go along the shore in a boat, early in the morning before there are many boats on the lakes and count each category of boat.  Continue reading

Next restoration work day Set Aug. 27 at Skull Island

The Fulton Chain of Lakes Association welcomes volunteers of all ages for a work session at Skull Island on Second Lake on Saturday, August 27 from 9 a.m. to noon.

Since last summer the organization has held a number of work sessions where soil was replaced in heavily eroded areas of the island and plants were transplanted from neighboring Treasure Island.

In the past year, the plants have begun to grow and, according to FCLA spokesperson Heather Stafford, there is a noticeable difference to the area.

On Saturday, the FCLA will be roping off another area to help restore another portion of the island.

Those seeking more information about the Skull Island Restoration Project can call Heather or Ed Stafford at (315) 369-6489.

Skull Island restoration work to continue Saturday, Aug. 13

Skull Island on Second Lake showing its erosion damage

Last year, the Fulton Chain of Lakes Association was successful in adopting Skull Island for restoration through the New York Department of Environmental Conservation’s “Adopt a Natural Resource” Program.

During the summer of 2010, the FCLA held two work sessions, where soil was replaced in heavily eroded areas and plants were transplanted from neighboring Treasure Island.

In the past year, the plants have begun to grow and, according to FCLA spokesperson Heather Stafford, there is a noticeable difference to the area.

Once again, the Fulton Chain of Lakes Association will be roping off another area to help restore another portion of the island.

The FCLA welcomes volunteer help of all ages to come to Skull Island on Second Lake on Saturday, August 13 at 9 a.m.

Those seeking more information about the Skull Island Restoration Project can call Heather or Ed Stafford at (315) 369-6489.

Invasive IDs: Lakes Association Seeking Plant Samples This Weekend

The Fulton Chain of Lakes Association will provide a booth at the Antique Boat Show in Old Forge on Saturday, July 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. where aquatic plant samples can be dropped off.

Members of the association will be able to determine whether samples are that of an invasive species, and whether measures should be taken to remove the plants from local waters.

Samples should be placed in a zip-lock bag with a note attached giving the day the plant was found, its location and the contributor’s name and phone number.

FCLA directors will also be present to answer questions and provide information about their current projects and concerns.

Fulton Chain of Lakes Assoc. awards highest honor to Don Kelly

Don Kelly of Old Forge received the Fulton Chain of Lakes Association (FCLA) Outstanding Service Award during the Skull Island Restoration Project last August.

The award is the highest honor presented by FCLA to a director who has made a significant contribution to the association.

Although he has chaired many committees and helped with many projects, the Skull Island Restoration Project is a favorite.

“Skull Island was one of the things that really got me excited last year. We put a little story in the paper and invited anyone who was interested to come and help with the restoration. A lot of people were waiting for us when we got there,” he said. Continue reading
