Red Hatters plan cruise

All area Red Hatters and friends are invited to take a two-hour Fall Cruise with Old Forge Lake Cruises on Thursday, September 22 at 1 p.m.

A discount price of $16 will be offered for a group of 10 or more individuals. You can bring a sandwich with you but beverages must be purchased onboard.

Interested individuals should meet at Old Fore Lake Cruises by 12:30 p.m.

Inlet Wants You! To help do it again for the record

One Square Mile of Hope Committee member Adele Burnett reports that boat registrations for the Saturday, September 24 attempt to break the Guiness Book of World Record for largest floating raft formation, have surpassed the 1,000 mark.

So far participants from Canada and 11 states—including Florida and Texas—have already registered, and the committee anticipates a surge in registrations as they edge closer to the event. Continue reading

This weekend in Old Forge 45th Annual Fire School dedicated in memory of 9/11

The 45th Annual Firefighter’s Drill School hosted by the Old Forge Fire Department is set for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, September 16 through 18.

Registration will be held at the Old Forge Fire Hall on Thursday, September 15 beginning at 6 p.m. and Friday, September 16, at 7:30 a.m. and again on Saturday, September 17 at 7:30 a.m.

Classes will be held Friday and Saturday at the Strand Theatre, Railroad Avenue and the George T. Hiltebrant Recreation Center and Pavilion on North Street.

Event co-organizer Jack Graham invites the public to observe the outdoor instructional classes from a safe distance. Continue reading

Members of North Woods Lodge #849 in Old Forge are collecting articles for flood victims within the NY state area.

The following articles are needed: clothing, boots, shoes, sneakers, jackets, sheets, blankets and pillows, non-perishable food items, and toiletries. Continue reading

Q: This may sound like a stupid question, but what is a sign?

A: The Town of Webb has a comprehensive Zoning Ordinance, which includes a whole section on signs. The definition of a sign is the first thing described in that section, which reads:

“For the purposes of this section, ‘sign’ shall mean any devise affixed to, painted upon, or represented directly or indirectly upon a building, structure, or land which directs attention to an object, product, place, activity, person, institution, organization, or business.” The ordinance continues with: The meaning of “sign” shall not include:

Parents: Lead by example in fight against childhood obesity

Last week we had the opportunity to attend the NYS Fair. Love the Fair! I grew up not far from the Fairgrounds and attended every chance I had.

One of my favorites things to do at the Fair is people-watch. But sadly, one thing I really took notice of this year was the number of obese children in attendance.

While childhood obesity may be due to genetic or hormonal issues, often the culprit is poor eating habits and inactivity.

Retreating to comfort of the woods following a school daze

It was early September and I was not quite ready to give up my summer to my fourth grade teacher Mrs. deCamp.

But when the bus turned in our driveway to pick up my sister and me that first day of school, it was clear that Mrs. deCamp had won.

I gripped my lunch box like a security blanket as I made my way up the three familiar bus steps and made my way to my seat.

I looked out the window and saw the early morning fog dressing the grasses with dew as the sun tried to break through the haze.

It was a muggy morning, much too warm for the windbreaker my mother insisted I wear.

When the bus was out of sight of our house, I peeled it off and wrapped it around my waist.

As the bus moved along we swished past the familiar forest of my summer’s exploits. Continue reading
