Joel Hawksley of Providence, RI, surprised his girlfriend, Caitlin Saniga, with a marriage proposal at the top of Eagle’s Nest, overlooking Fourth Lake on Saturday, October 10th.
Joel, who was visiting his grandmother Ruth Hawksley of Eagle Bay over Columbus Day weekend, chose the venue because of the many fond memories he has of climbing the mountain.
“Eagle’s Nest is up the trail from my grandmother’s cottage.
I have been hiking it pretty much since I was able to walk,” he said.

Old Forge Fire Chief Charlie Bogardus, volunteer firefighter Larry Ventura Town of Webb Patrolman Cody Luebbert visited Town of Webb school students in grades kindergarten through fifth on Thursday, October 15 as part of National Fire Prevention Week.
Chief Bogardus talked to the children about the dangers of handling matches and cigarette lighters, the importance of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and what to do in case of a fire emergency, specifically how to dial 911. Continue reading
The Old Forge Volunteer Fire Department would like to thank recent donors to their annual fund drive conducted in conjunction with the Firefighters Drill School.
The funds collected during this period support rescue operations and equipment as well as education for volunteers.
In the weeks before “Fire School” committee members contact local business owners in person to offer them a poster welcoming visiting firemen and explaining that much of our equipment and training is not taxpayer funded. Continue reading

A clear blue sky, warm sunshine and a light breeze accompanied SHARP (Senior Health Activity and Recreation Pro-gram) participants on Monday, Ocotber 12 on a cruise down the Fulton Chain with Old Forge Lake Cruises.
It was a spontaneous Columbus Day event that we arranged during our Wednesday program last week. We sailed on the last boat of the season.
Though it was probably our last outdoor event of the season, we are looking forward to many fun programs to get us through the winter! Continue reading

Richard Rivette died on October 6, 2015 at the VA Hospital in LaJolla, CA. Three weeks earlier, Dick celebrated his 86th birthday at a party in his honor at the poolside clubhouse of his “one year new” residence in Santee, CA hosted by his companion and caregiver, Stephanie West.
