Services set for Sheryl Pierson, 75

Sheryl “Sher” Pierson, 75, of Webster, NY passed away on January 6, 2014. She leaves her husband of 54 years, David; children, Kathy (Ken) Schadt and Mark (Shari) Pierson;  grandchildren, Tyler and Ethan Schadt and Danni Pierson; nieces and nephews.Pierson, Sheryl

She was predeceased by her parents, Norman and Virginia Putnam; and a brother, Tom Putnam.

Born in, and having lived in Webster for most of her life, Sher also lived in Old Forge for 15 years and wintered in Florida. Throughout her life, she enjoyed volunteering at church, school and Webster Chamber of Commerce. She also loved being a member of the Webster Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.  Continue reading →

Ruby B. Chesebro, 80, passes away

Ruby B. Chesebro, 80, of Thendara and formerly of Sherrill, NY, died peacefully at her home while surrounded by her family on January 1, 2014Back Camera

She was born January 2, 1933, in Sherrill, a daughter of George and Mary (Turner) Barnes. Ruby graduated from Sherrill High School and attended Cortland State College. She was united in marriage with her childhood sweetheart, William F. Chesebro, on September 5, 1953, in Sherrill.

Laughter: Surefire way to chase away winter blues

Everyone experiences those days when life just seems too much to handle. When no matter what we do, everything just seems so difficult to think about or deal with. If the feeling hangs on for a while it is called the blues.

The blues are very debilitating. We can see it in the eyes and body language—or hear it in the voice—of those who suffer from it.

When I was young, my grandmother and our beloved first family dog passed away around the same time. It was all such a huge mystery to me.

It was this culmination of pain that caused me to experience my first bout of the blues.

It seems winter here in our Adirondacks can bring on the blues pretty quickly. Pipes freeze, snow piles up faster than we can shovel it, and conversation at the post office revolves around who had the lowest temperature reading on their thermometer that day.  Continue reading →

Now you see it, then… Hey, who turned out the lights!?

Nothing is quite as humbling as the loss of power to one’s humble abode. This is one of the few things that can immediately bring me to my knees, reducing me to a whining pile of mush—no water, no lights, still no generator.

In the five seconds following such an outage, I am instantly thirsty, hungry, and in need of the potty.

Cobwebs mysteriously appear, swaying gaily in corners and from the rafters, just screaming for my vacuum to be operational.

The entire house, alive and happy one second ago, becomes a dreary death-like tomb that makes me want to sob with the injustice of it all. Continue reading →

Up and down temperatures create problems for man and beast

Here we go again with more yo-yo weather. One day it’s minus 22, the next day it’s 40 with beautiful snow to ski and snowmobile on, and the next day, wet mush.

Just when we think we are going to have an old-fashioned winter it switches back to a January thaw—and now we’ve had three of them. _MG_4472

After this cold snap it looks like another one is on the way.

The problem with these extremes is that water runs most every time, and then there is a quick freeze when it goes below zero while this water is running.

Record cold temperatures not unprecedented locally

At the age of 87, Jane Breakey of Eagle Bay has many recollections of life growing up in the area which are permanently frozen in her memory bank—some of which are literally about being frozen.

One such memory was of a particularly brutal 1934 walk to the Town of Webb School when the air temperature dipped to a remarkable 59 below zero.

“I was in the second grade, just short of my eighth birthday. I remember my face was frozen by the time I got to school,” Jane said. Continue reading →
