DEC releases draft species management plan for black bears

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) released a draft species management plan for black bears on Thursday, and will be accepting public comments on it through February 21, 2014.

Black bears are a very popular wildlife species among the general public, but can pose significant challenges when the bears become too abundant or are acting boldly in populated areas.1007bear1

Tim and Patty Foley to reign as Winter Carnival king and queen

Old Forge’s annual Winter Carnival weekend will be held Friday through Sunday, February 14 through 16 with events held in the village and at McCauley Mountain.

With the event taking place on Valentine’s Day and in the midst of the 2014 Winter Olympics, the Winter Carnival committee has announced, “We LOVE the Olympics,” as this year’s theme.IMG_1810******

Selected to serve as the Winter Carnival King and Queen are Tim and Patty Foley of Old Forge.

As longtime skiers and supporters of the Polar Bear Ski Club, the Foleys were instrumental in helping to resurrect the Winter Carnival—an early-day annual tradition that had gone dormant for decades.

It was Tim’s fond childhood memories of the early Winter Carnival, coupled with a mission to shine more light on McCauley Mountain as a community asset, that motivated he and Patty to form a committee of like-minded individuals in the mid-1990’s. Continue reading →

Luncheon to dovetail with library’s 100th anniversary

The Old Forge Library’s annual luncheon, which in the past has been held in January, has been moved to Monday, February 10 to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the library’s founding.

The luncheon will be held at the library at noon and is free of charge. The menu will include soup, sandwiches, beverages and a birthday cake baked by Trish Sehring, a multi-time winner of the library’s annual Sweetheart Bake-Off. Continue reading →

Together, we can resurrect the Inlet Fish & Game Club

Calling all cars, calling all cars. Is there anybody in the Town of Inlet interested in having a Fish & Game Club again? I saw quite a few local kids participating in Inlet’s Fall Fishing Derby at Adirondack Kids Day on the first Saturday in October.

And, hold onto your hats, there were local adults volunteering too!

It seems a shame to let the opportunity slip away for kids to enjoy the outdoors—while residing not much more than a good spit away from water or a hiking or ski trail—just because their parents don’t partake.  Continue reading →

Library readies poetry & illustration contest

The Old Forge Library’s upcoming annual Poetry and Illustration Contest will carry the theme of, “Times Gone By.” The contest and exhibit is open to students in grades kindergarten through 12 and adults living in Herkimer, Oneida and Madison counties, as well as the Town of Inlet.

Entries will be accepted from Saturday, February 1 through Saturday, March 1st. There are four categories: Grades K to 4, grades 5 to 8, grades 9 to 12, and adult. Contest details are available at the library.

Judges for the poetry contest are Paula Roy and Paul Kocak and judges for the illustration contest are artists Martha Deming and Loretta Lepkowski.

The contestants’ entries will be hung on March 24 by the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. The Opening Exhibit Reception, which is open to the public, will be held on March 25 at 7 p.m.

Webb Way school program seeks propane receipts from community

Amerigas Propane has offered a fundraising opportunity to the Town of Webb School. For every gallon of propane purchased, they will donate two cents toward the school’s Webb Way program.

Many gallons add up, and all of the money received will go toward rewards for the students.

Polar Bear Ski Club invites all to January 19 spaghetti dinner

The Polar Bear Ski Club is planning a Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser at the McCauley Mountain Chalet on Sunday, January 19th.

The dinner will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The cost is $8 per person or a $25 maximum for families. Take-outs will be Proceeds of the event will benefit the Polar Bear Ski Club.

An Aprés Ski Party will take place from 4 p.m. Music will be provided by Doug Green with special guest Chloe Barkauskas.  There will also be night skiing on Playmate and cross country skiing and snowshoeing under the stars.
