DEC releases draft species management plan for black bears

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) released a draft species management plan for black bears on Thursday, and will be accepting public comments on it through February 21, 2014.

Black bears are a very popular wildlife species among the general public, but can pose significant challenges when the bears become too abundant or are acting boldly in populated areas.1007bear1

Library readies poetry & illustration contest

The Old Forge Library’s upcoming annual Poetry and Illustration Contest will carry the theme of, “Times Gone By.” The contest and exhibit is open to students in grades kindergarten through 12 and adults living in Herkimer, Oneida and Madison counties, as well as the Town of Inlet.

Entries will be accepted from Saturday, February 1 through Saturday, March 1st. There are four categories: Grades K to 4, grades 5 to 8, grades 9 to 12, and adult. Contest details are available at the library.

Judges for the poetry contest are Paula Roy and Paul Kocak and judges for the illustration contest are artists Martha Deming and Loretta Lepkowski.

The contestants’ entries will be hung on March 24 by the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. The Opening Exhibit Reception, which is open to the public, will be held on March 25 at 7 p.m.

Webb Way school program seeks propane receipts from community

Amerigas Propane has offered a fundraising opportunity to the Town of Webb School. For every gallon of propane purchased, they will donate two cents toward the school’s Webb Way program.

Many gallons add up, and all of the money received will go toward rewards for the students.

Propane customers of Amerigas who would like to help with the fundraiser are asked to send their original receipts to: Town of Webb School, Attn: Judy Ehrensbeck, P.O. Box 38, Old Forge, NY 13420.  Continue reading

Polar Bear Ski Club invites all to January 19 spaghetti dinner

The Polar Bear Ski Club is planning a Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser at the McCauley Mountain Chalet on Sunday, January 19th.

The dinner will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The cost is $8 per person or a $25 maximum for families. Take-outs will be Proceeds of the event will benefit the Polar Bear Ski Club.

An Aprés Ski Party will take place from 4 p.m. Music will be provided by Doug Green with special guest Chloe Barkauskas.  There will also be night skiing on Playmate and cross country skiing and snowshoeing under the stars.
