Library readies poetry & illustration contest

The Old Forge Library’s upcoming annual Poetry and Illustration Contest will carry the theme of, “Times Gone By.” The contest and exhibit is open to students in grades kindergarten through 12 and adults living in Herkimer, Oneida and Madison counties, as well as the Town of Inlet.

Entries will be accepted from Saturday, February 1 through Saturday, March 1st. There are four categories: Grades K to 4, grades 5 to 8, grades 9 to 12, and adult. Contest details are available at the library.

Judges for the poetry contest are Paula Roy and Paul Kocak and judges for the illustration contest are artists Martha Deming and Loretta Lepkowski.

The contestants’ entries will be hung on March 24 by the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. The Opening Exhibit Reception, which is open to the public, will be held on March 25 at 7 p.m.

Emcee Mike Cunningham  will announce the winners and honorable mentions. Winners will receive $25 and a certificate and honorable mentions will receive a certificate.

Participants whose poems and illustrations win or receive honorable mention in their categories will have an opportunity to read and/or discuss their work.

All entries will remain on display in the library wing from March 25 through May 24th. The public is invited to stop by and vote for their favorite entry.

Also included in this project are Poetry and  Illustration Workshops.

The Poetry Workshops will be  held on Saturday, January 18 from 10 a.m. till noon.  Partici-pants and their instructors will split up into three groups: Grades K to 5, grades 6 to 12, and adults.

The Illustration Workshops will be held Saturday, January 25 with grades K to 5 and Grades 6 to12 meeting from 10 a.m. till noon and adults meeting from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Participants in the workshops are not required to enter their work and contest entrants are not required to attend the workshops.
