A fond farewell from the Walley Family

An open letter to the community:

On behalf of the Walley family, I would like to take this opportunity to express our love, admiration, and heartfelt thanks to the entire community.

As some of you may have already heard, we are relocating to Jefferson, Georgia. Naturally, such a move carries with it a sense of anticipation and excitement. At the same time, however, we also feel a considerable measure of sadness and loss.

Our connection to this area goes back four generations, starting with my grandparents. Then, twenty years ago, having dreamed of making the Adirondacks our permanent home for quite some time, Sue and I decided to take the plunge. Webb: Jordan Levi named Kiwanis’ Student of the Month for December

The Kiwanis Club of the Central Adirondacks has announced that its Student of the Month for December is Jordan Levi. Jordan is the daughter of John and Thera Levi of Old Forge and is a senior at Town of Webb Union Free School.

The Student of the Month is a program initiated by the Kiwanis Club, in cooperation with the Town of Webb School, that recognizes senior students.  Continue reading →

Kiwanis partnering with ‘One Square Mile of Hope’ to regain world record

The Kiwanis Club of the Central Adirondacks is joining with the One Square Mile of Hope Committee in its attempt to regain its place in the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest raft of canoes and kayaks, in an event that will be held on September 13, 2014.

One Square Mile of Hope events held in 2008 and 2011 in Inlet, which raised funds for breast cancer research, were successful in breaking the standing records.

However, it was announced on November 20, 2013 that the Suttons Bay Flotilla in Michigan had set a new record in August by assembling 2,099 vessels, breaking Inlet’s 2011 record of 1,902. Continue reading →

Justin Dibble graduates from NYS Police Academy

Justin Dibble was among the 180 new troopers who joined the ranks of the New York State Police following graduation from the New York State Police Academy on Tuesday, December 10th. Justin Dibble PIC

The ceremony was held at the Empire State Plaza Convention Hall in Albany.

Trooper Dibble, a 2001 Town of Webb School graduate, has been assigned to Troop G in Latham and will report to field duty on December 16th.

Attending the graduation were his parents, Cathy and Bob Dibble and sister, Denise Payne of Old Forge, and his brother Adam Court.

Raquette Lake’s Anna Gibbs Lamphear, 89, passes away

Anna (Ann) Gibbs Lamphear, age 89, passed away on December 9, 2013 in her home under the care of Highpeaks Hospice and in the attendance of her family and caregivers, Murray and Karen Lamphear.

Ann was born on May 4, 1924 in Turin, NY to the late Carry Sattes and Sherman Gibbs.  She attended Moira High School. In 1941 she moved to Old Forge, NY and for four years she  ran the mail truck from Old Forge to Raquette Lake. This was quite a feat and unusual for women at this time. Former Old Forge resident, Patrick McCann, 73, passes away

Patrick “Skull” McCann, 73, passed away after a short illness on Wednesday, December 4, 2013. Born in Brooklyn, NY, he later lived in Old Forge from 1973 until 2001, and greatly enjoyed his retirement in New Smyrna Beach, FL, where he loved his afternoons with his many friends at Beachside Tavern, Peanuts and Moe’s.Pat McCann

Pat, a graduate of Pace University in New York City, was employed as an accountant by Conorada Petroleum, Amerada Petroleum and Gulf & Western in New York City, and later by the USPS and Helmer’s Fuel in Old Forge until his retirement in 2001.

Services held for former Town of Webb Police Chief Crofut, 87

Robert Crofut, former Town of Webb Chief of Police, age 87, of Old Forge, passed away December 5, 2013 at home with his family at his side.

He was born April 30, 1926, in Old Forge, the son of Harold and Olive Clark Crofut. Bob received his education in Old Forge Schools, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He proudly served our country during World War II.  Chief Crofut, with cruiser

He married Carol Harwood on September 11, 1948, in Inlet. The couple recently celebrated 65 years of marriage. Following his military service, he worked for the Town of Webb Highway Department; was later employed as Game Warden; and retired as Chief of the Town of Webb Police Department where he served for 38 years.
