Raquette Lake’s Anna Gibbs Lamphear, 89, passes away

Anna (Ann) Gibbs Lamphear, age 89, passed away on December 9, 2013 in her home under the care of Highpeaks Hospice and in the attendance of her family and caregivers, Murray and Karen Lamphear.

Ann was born on May 4, 1924 in Turin, NY to the late Carry Sattes and Sherman Gibbs.  She attended Moira High School. In 1941 she moved to Old Forge, NY and for four years she  ran the mail truck from Old Forge to Raquette Lake. This was quite a feat and unusual for women at this time. Many articles have since been written about Ann’s experiences and adventures.

On March 23, 1946, Ann married Edgar (Ed) M. Lamphear of Raquette Lake. Ann was a member of the Raquette Lake Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary and the Raquette Lake Chapel. Ann enjoyed fishing, boating, and snowmobiling.

Additionally she was an expert knitter. During her latter years she was the devoted caregiver to her husband, Ed.

Ann is survived by two sisters-in-law, Doris Lamphear and Jean Beckingham. Additionally she is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, and several great and great great nieces and nephews. Ann was predeceased by by her husband Ed and her only sibling, Frederick Gibbs.
