Services held for former Town of Webb Police Chief Crofut, 87

Robert Crofut, former Town of Webb Chief of Police, age 87, of Old Forge, passed away December 5, 2013 at home with his family at his side.

He was born April 30, 1926, in Old Forge, the son of Harold and Olive Clark Crofut. Bob received his education in Old Forge Schools, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He proudly served our country during World War II.  Chief Crofut, with cruiser

He married Carol Harwood on September 11, 1948, in Inlet. The couple recently celebrated 65 years of marriage. Following his military service, he worked for the Town of Webb Highway Department; was later employed as Game Warden; and retired as Chief of the Town of Webb Police Department where he served for 38 years.

Chief Crofut was a life member of the Old Forge Fire Department; a member of Covey Pashley American Legion Post #893 for over 60 years; and a member of the New York State Association of Chiefs of Police.

He loved the outdoors and time spent at hunting camp, trapping, and was an avid lake trout fisherman.

He is survived by his wife, Carol; his children, Shelley C. Ufford (Laurence J.) of Norwich, VT; Thomas H. Crofut of Old Forge, and Casey C. Crofut (Judy Smith), of Old Forge; eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his son, Ronald J. Crofut in 2007, and by his sister Betty Cole in 1976.

The family would like to express their sincere thanks to all of his caregivers from Hospice and from HASCA.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Niccolls Memorial Presbyterian Church, Old Forge. Spring interment will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Calling hours are Wednesday, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral Home, 128 Fern Ave., Old Forge.
