18th Annual Black Fly Challenge starts from Indian Lake, June 8

The 18th annual Black Fly Challenge Adirondack Mountain Bike Race, presented by Mountainman Outdoor Supply Co., will start from Indian Lake at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 8th.

Racers will compete for a share of the biggest purse in race history—over $8,200—for competitors in 31 different categories and age classes. Continue reading

View hosting annual Neighbor Day Open House on Sunday, June 9th

Friends and neighbors are invited for a day of fun at View on Sunday, June 9 for the annual Neighbor Day. Neighbor Day is an open house event that can be enjoyed by the whole family. It will include entertainment, activities, demos and a chicken BBQ and will take place from noon to 4 p.m.

The Moose Radio will be broadcasting live from View and Ellen Drake will play the piano.

The chicken BBQ will be sold and served by North Woods Lodge Masons & Dewey-Old Forge Order of the Eastern Star. Hamburgers and hot dogs can be purchased from the members of Kiwanis Key Club with proceeds benefiting local food pantries. There will also be free Sno cones. Continue reading

Card of Thanks

The FunRaiser for “Bridge to Skate” that was held at McCauley Mountain on Sunday, April 6 was a huge success. With great competition and entertainment, over $1,000 was raised to help build a school in Honduras.

This would not have been possible without the support of many participants and volunteers. From the relay race, to the waitress race, to the monkey toss and all of the other festivities, a great time was had by all.

Pup TentSetting up base camp in the backyard wilderness at Limekiln Sharing with others is part of growing up, but sharing with a little brother can be difficult. There were only two weeks of school left before the summer of 1974 would commence, and for this eight year old boy, it could not come quick enough.

The evenings were getting longer and the days were warm well after dark.

In fact, it was so warm that I wanted to try out my father’s little orange pup tent with a backyard overnight bivouac. Continue reading

She is employed by The Whiteface Lodge in Lake Placid, NY.

Ashley is the daughter of Ed and Sandy Booton of Eagle Bay and the granddaughter of Peg Morgan of Old Forge.

Hans Schmid and Sandy Tetreault

Sandy Stripp Tetreault and Hans Schmid of Middle Branch Woodworking have been working diligently on a cabinet which, with its contents, will be dedicated at the Old Forge Library this weekend.

Tetreault and Schmid have donated their time and talent, as well as glass doors for the cabinet which will house quilting books and a thimble collection donated by the late Ceil Buckley. The cabinet will reside in a second floor room which is used by the Pointed Pine Quilters for their regular quilting sessions. Continue reading

There’s nothing to fear, ’cept for wind, snakes, flying, et cetera ‘There’s nothing to fear but fear itself.” It’s a famous quote spoken by FDR many years ago.

What a load of bull. Everyone’s afraid of something, except maybe Batman, but does he really count? After all, he’s got his own cave where all is safe and sound all the ime.

We all have to learn to manage our fear, and the range of scaredy-catness spreads far and wide. or example, lots of people are afraid of clowns. Other’s greatest fears involve lying, snakes, death, or public speaking. ome are terrified of the dark, insects, tattoos, the boogieman, y God the list is endless. Continue reading
