18th Annual Black Fly Challenge starts from Indian Lake, June 8

The 18th annual Black Fly Challenge Adirondack Mountain Bike Race, presented by Mountainman Outdoor Supply Co., will start from Indian Lake at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 8th.

Racers will compete for a share of the biggest purse in race history—over $8,200—for competitors in 31 different categories and age classes.

The finish line will be at Inlet’s Fern Park, where there will be live music, a beer garden, food by Inlet Volunteer Emergency Services, sponsors, vendors and awards. The festivities will begin at noon.

Over half the 40-mile race goes through the wild and scenic Moose River Recreation Area with a mix of bikes found nowhere else.

Competitors on mountain bikes, cyclocross bikes, tandems, even unicycles and a triplet bike have completed the race.

The 2012 Black Fly Challenge (BFC) saw a record number of 506 entries and a record number of 459 finishers.

Ruth Sherman of Spencer, NY set a record for the women’s fastest finishing time and Cory Burns of Watertown broke the record in the men’s category.

The BFC has become an annual ritual for many cycling enthusiasts in the Eastern U.S. and beyond with entries from as far away as Colorado.

Some call it “the Adirondacks’ Greatest Race.”

The Black Fly Challenge has grown from a regional cycling event to become the biggest bike race and one of the largest sporting events in the Adirondack Park, attracting thousands of people to the mountain towns of Inlet and Indian Lake for a most unique race.
