Letter to the Editor: Sheila Brady’s article much appreciated

Dear Editor:

Sheila Brady’s article in last week’s paper was a real gift. Many of us see the international workers that spend a summer in our area, at their jobs and around town.

They seem like good kids having a good experience in this country that most of us are proud to share with them.

And Sheila’s article reminds us that we aren’t just their hosts. We have an obligation to their parents and loved ones back home to make sure they are safe, cared for, and enjoying a rewarding experience. Continue reading

Letter to the Editor: Enjoying Weekly’s writers, especially Mrs. Lucky

To the Editor:

Just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy reading your newspaper. We pay to have the paper delivered to our home in Rome and I look forward to reading it each week.

I especially enjoy the columns written by local citizens: Charles Herr, Kelly Hamlin and Mitch and Gary Lee.

However, my very favorite is Jan from Woodgate, “Just Call me Mrs. Lucky.” She really gets to the heart of matters and presents the woman’s point of view with so much humor. Continue reading

A Nathan Farb photographic print on display in View's exhibit space

Photographer Nathan Farb will have a series of photographic works on display in the “Adirondack View Finders: Farb, Bowie, Battaglia, Heilman” exhibit at View which will be on display until March 3, 2012.

Farb has been examining the Adirondack landscape for over 50 years.

Combining romanticism with a probing scientific eye, he is considered the preeminent photographer of The Adirondacks.

His photographic work has been published in many museums and global publications including, The Museum of Modern Art, and New York Times Magazine.

As visitors enter the exhibition, the first piece that they will encounter is Farb’s six by four foot photograph entitled “Ray Brook Pond.” Continue reading

Local quilt group stitches memories for families of deployed slodiers

The Pointed Pine Quilters of Old Forge are making lap quilts for the children of soldiers that are soon to be deployed from Fort Drum.

The quilts feature nine blocks of the soldiers’ family photos that have been scanned and transferred to fabric.

The project is sponsored by Project Strong, a program initiated by the YMCA of Watertown.

The idea was proposed locally by Sandy White, a member of the Pointed Pine Quilters, who learned of the project while attending a recent Quilters Consortium.

The quilting group make quilts as fundraisers for area organizations, but according to White, they were looking for a new project to tackle. Continue reading

Mike Levensailor and Ronnie Parent open new automotive service garage in Thendara

Mike Levensailor and Ronnie Parent, both of Old Forge, recently opened the doors to their new business, Trackside Garage, located at 128 Watson Rd. in Thendara, right along the railroad tracks.

The garage handles all types of mechanical service, with Parent specializing in snowmobile and small engine repairs, and Levensailor, a 30-year experienced mechanic, handling the heavy equipment and automotive repair. Continue reading
