Letter to the Editor: Sheila Brady’s article much appreciated

Dear Editor:

Sheila Brady’s article in last week’s paper was a real gift. Many of us see the international workers that spend a summer in our area, at their jobs and around town.

They seem like good kids having a good experience in this country that most of us are proud to share with them.

And Sheila’s article reminds us that we aren’t just their hosts. We have an obligation to their parents and loved ones back home to make sure they are safe, cared for, and enjoying a rewarding experience.

We need to watch out for these kids. They aren’t simply here to toil and labor. They are young people, like our own kids, coming here to enjoy an adventure-a new place, a new culture, a part of the world they may only get to see once.

We need to make sure we don’t discount the cost and sacrifices many of their families have made to allow them to be here.

I would be so heart broken if my daughter journeyed overseas, barely speaking the language, and found herself alone and trapped in a bad dream.

We can’t be their parents, but we can allow their parents to sleep well knowing their kids are safe, happy and in good hands. And that they love the United States-especially the beautiful Adirondacks.
