Old Forge: Crew Finishes Rebuilding of First Navigation Dock at Lakefront

The work on the new Navigation Dock at the Old Forge Lakefront was completed on Tuesday, June 28, just in time for area 4th of July festivities.

Replacement of the old dock was assisted by a $24,000 grant from the New York State Division of Coastal Resources Local Waterfront Revitalization Plan that was earmarked for the engineering costs.

The grant award, which was administererd by CAP-21, was announced in November 2008.

Town of Webb Supervisor Robert Moore said that $175,000 was budgeted for the entire project, which included replacing a small section of paver stones along the boardwalk.

“We’re very grateful to Waldron Construction of Raquette Lake who constructed the dock, and to our Department of Public Works personnel for the ground work that needed to be done,” he said.

“They really spruced things up in time for the 4th of July and for this weekend’s Antique Boat Show.”

Tika: Well-known Inlet dog passes away

Tika, our beloved Alaskan malamute, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, July 2, 2011.

Tika was a rescue and adopted from the Herkimer Humane Society eight years ago.

He instantly became an attraction and a greeter at our shop, Pedals & Petals, where you could always find him laying on the front porch.

Customers and friends would stop in just to see him, and most likely take his picture. He always smiled for the camera and loved the attention and the petting.

His favorite activities were with his mom, Gordi, who would take him most everywhere she went. In his earlier days, he liked to climb Rocky Mountain, hike in Fern Park, and go cross country skiing.

He also loved to go for car rides. One of his favorite places to “hang out” was the flower cooler at the shop.

Tika will be fondly remembered, extremely missed and always loved.

R.I.P. handsome baby…

Gordi, Ted and

Hallie Christodaro

VIEW Celebration: Special Tribute Honors Kashiwa as Founder of 60-year Art Show

A one-of-a-kind silver and brass pin was presented to Miriam “Mirnie” Kashiwa by the Directors Emeriti of View, the new arts center of Old Forge, during the opening of the Central Adirondack Art Show on Thursday, June 30.

The pin was in honor of Kashiwa, in commemoration of her founding the show 60 years ago.

Offering personal tributes at the event were fellow Directors Emeriti Michele deCamp, Shirley Lindsay and Richard “Deke” Morrison.

Other Directors Emeriti in attendance were Liz Martin, Carol Morrison, and Al Stripp.

The tribute included the following narrative composed by jewelry designer Ken Thibado who was commissioned to create the pin: “A View nameplate in polished brass featuring the Arts Center’s peaks in silver. A passing of the torch worn on the proud chest of the founder. A tribute to the woman whose path led us here. Having moved mountains, this pin honors our roots. A pin with a View.”

According to deCamp, over 100 people, including the 40 artists whose work is featured in the show, were in attendance for the opening and presentation.

“It was an emotionally-filled evening. Mirnie was very surprised by the special tribute from the people who have known her for so many years,” deCamp said.

Directors Emeriti who were unable to attend were Faith Norton and Bea Foley.
