Part Two: Tips for making food prep more pleasurable for seniors

Continuing on last week’s cooking tips for seniors theme, here are more powerhouse meals that can be pulled together quickly and without a lot of fuss. Consider them a welcome alternative to convenience foods that are highly processed and high in sodium, fat and sugar!

• Heat-and-serve soups are also a great option for an easy lunch or dinner.

Just be sure to read the label to find the exact serving size and be sure to keep sodium levels in check. I’ll often throw in some rinsed canned beans for added protein.

Children or friends can also help out by making single serving, frozen meals that their loved ones can pull out of the freezer and microwave.

Constipation is a common complaint among older adults, so fueling the body with the following foods offers nutritional benefits that will keep them on the move:

Inlet: Hockey teams battle in last weekend’s Adirondack Ice Bowl

Sub-zero air temperatures accompanied by gusty winds are enough to deter the average individual from heading outdoors for any reason, but in the hockey world such conditions are considered prime.IMG_2225*******

And that point was proven last weekend when despite the frigid temps, an estimated 3,500 hockey players and fans came to Inlet for the 6th Annual Adirondack Ice Bowl Pond Hockey Festival on Fourth Lake.

Forty-four teams from across the country competed at the event.

The Polar Bear Youth Alpine Ski Team competed in an Adirondack Council Race at Woods Valley on Sunday, January 19 with boys and girls placing in the top of their age groups. The results were:

Birds flocking to feeders thanks to snow, extreme cold

We are having record cold temperatures again this week. Now it’s going all the way down to the gulf states where they will also be getting some snow and ice. Snow on a palm tree must be something to see.

There were some hearty souls watching the Adirondack Ice Bowl Pond Hockey Festival at the east end of Fourth Lake over last weekend.

The temperature on Saturday did get up into the 20s but the wind down the lake sure put the wind chill factor much lower.

It hardly got above zero on Friday which is cold enough without any wind.

Those bright lights around the rinks out on the lake don’t give off that much heat but the games went on without much trouble.  Continue reading →

Custody issues and their effects on tax deductions

I share custody of my child with the child’s mother. However, the child actually lives in my home the majority of the time. An agreement was reached allowing the mother to claim the child in the odd years, I will claim him in the even years. What do I lose in the years I don’t claim him as a dependent?

Establishing dependency of a “qualifying child”:

You can claim a “qualifying child” if they meet specific requirements related to residence, relationship to you, age, financial support provided and income.

Claiming dependents can give you a tax deduction worth up to $3,900 per dependent and also make you eligible for many other tax deductions like the Earned Income Tax Credit.

Since the child’s primary residence is with you, the mother cannot claim the child as a dependent unless there is a written agreement dated after 1984 and before 2009 in which the following is stated: Continue reading →

Old Forge: Entries sought for 2014 Winter Carnival Parade

The Old Forge Winter Carnival Committee is encouraging all winter enthusiasts to join in the carnival parade up Main Street on Friday, February 14, the kick-off event of carnival weekend which will be held on Saturday and Sunday, February 15 and 16 at McCauley Mountain.

This year’s theme is “Old Forge Loves the Olympics,” in celebration of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games and Valentine’s Day.

Marching in the parade will be Grand Marshal John “Louie” Ehrensbeck, a former Olympian who trained at McCauley Mountain, past carnival royalty, and soon-to-be-crowned king and queen Tim and Patty Foley.

The parade starts at 6:45 p.m. from the Town of Webb School bus circle and the committee welcomes entries from the creative to the zany. Line-up begins at 6:30 p.m.

Following the parade, there will an ice skating party at the outdoor rink on Joy Tract Road. Bring your own skates and enjoy a bonfire, music and hot cocoa.

Alica Burnett named to Dean’s List

Alicia Burnett has been named to the Dean’s List at Herkimer County Community College for the fall semester for achieving a GPA of 3.73.

Burnett studied Fitness and Wellness at SUNY Plattsburgh prior to transferring to HCCC last semester to pursue studies in Sports and Recreation Management. She was recently accepted into an Honors Program for the spring semester.

A 2011 graduate of the Town of Webb School, she is the daughter of Adele Burnett of Inlet.
