Presentation on Life of Anne Bastille at Old Forge Library on Sept. 20

Leslie Surprenant will offer a power point presentation on the life of the late Anne LaBastille on Friday, September 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the Old Forge Library.

LaBastille, an ecologist and award-winning author of the Woodswoman series of books passed away in 2011. Suprenant, an Eagle Bay native, was a longtime friend of LaBastille’s. As a fellow NYS licensed guide and co-instructor of Wilderness Women Workshops, she shared many outdoor adventures with LaBastille.

She is currently an ecologist for NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and leads the Invasive Species Coordination Unit in Albany.

Floodplain complications getting worse with real property transfers

Who has experienced difficulty in selling or buying a house in the last couple of years because of a problem with a Floodplain issue? Plenty… and it’s only going to get worse.

Floodplain regulations apply to the development of land, disturbance of the natural ground, filling, removing earth, the installation of a driveway and certainly the construction of any type of building, no matter how big or small.

All may be subject to the regulatory requirements of the local Floodplain laws.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency [FEMA] mandated that all communities adopt floodplain development regulations many years ago, back in the early 1980’s.

Van Auken’s Inne event to benefit Herkimer County Humane Society

The Marks family, owners of Van Auken’s Inne in Thendara, will host a wine, beer and cheese tasting event in support of the Herkimer County Humane Society on Saturday, September 28th.

The fundraiser, Pairing for Caring in the Adirondacks, will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. and will feature wine, beer and cheese tastings, door prizes, raffles, and give-aways. Donation is $20 per person.

Eight tables will be decorated with gift baskets and pictures and bios of adoptable pets. Supporters can come and go throughout the four-hour event.

All products sampled will be donated by regional distributors including McCraith Beverages, Empire Merchants, Southern Wine & Spirits, Zimowski Foods, Carlo Musi and various liquor companies.

New course record set at 2013 Adirondack Canoe Classic

It was another successful year for the Adirondack Canoe Classic with a new course record set by the four-person team of Andy Trebold, Steve Lajoie, Nick Walton and Matt Rimer who finished the 90 mile course in 11 hours, 6 minutes and 29 seconds.

The previous record was 11 hours, 24 minutes.

The race began from the Old Forge Pond on Friday, September 6 with 275 registered racers and ended Sunday, September 8 in Saranac Lake with 260 crossing the finish line.

Charity Go-Kart Race raises $12,600 for Strand’s Digitalization Campaign

The 20th Annual Calypso’s Cove Charity Go-Kart Race on Tuesday, September 12 raised $12,600 for this year’s single benefactor, The Strand Theatre’s Go Digital or Go Dark Campaign.

This year’s event broke last year’s record of $12,400 raised.

Thirty-four teams and 170 racers from Old Forge to Indian Lake competed for the coveted trophy in 51 races.

Admission fees of 300 spectators contributed to the overall amount of funds raised.

“The money was solely raised by community participation, which is a true accomplishment for the area,” said Katie Noonan of Enchanted Forest Water Safari, sponsor of the event.

First place in the race went to Dunn’s Boat Service with 33 points, followed closely behind was the Old Forge Camping Resort in second place with 32 points and third place went to Seventh Lake House with 29 points.

Kenmore Cottages holds fun fundraiser for Strand

Andi and Ray Smith, owners of the Kenmore Cottages on Fourth Lake, had a lot of fun this summer with their guests—and at the same time helped to raise awareness and funds for the Strand Theatre’s digital conversion.

Early in the summer, when guests chose Halloween as an event theme, the Smiths dressed up as movie theater concessionaires and distributed popcorn as a treat.

Library presents Nature Writing Workshop, Sept. 21

The Adirondack Center for Writing (ACW) and the Old Forge Library will co-sponsor  a day-long Nature Writing Workshop on Saturday, September 21 at the pavilion at Nicks Lake State Campground.

Robin Kimmerer will lead participants in writing exercises to develop experience, thoughtful reflection, and strong communication. The workshop will explore techniques to reveal the stories that live in a landscape in both material and metaphor.

Dr. Kimmerer is a mother, scientist, writer and Distinguished Teaching Professor of Environmental Biology at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse.
