Old Forge Fire Dept. announces Bass Tourney winners

The Old Forge Fire Department’s “Almost” Annual Bass Tournament was held Saturday, June 16, with 21 teams participating.

The winners of this year’s tournament were Anthony Sege and Donald (Ringer) Wyman of Woodgate who had a total catch of five bass that weighed in at 16 pounds, 6 ounces.

With a total of five bass weighing in at 14 pounds and 10 ounces were second place winners Richard Tehan and Erik Ashley of Marcy.

Tehan and Ashley also won the award for largest single bass caught with their 5 pound, 1.2 ounce, 20 and 1/4” long fish. Continue reading

Letter to the Editor: Outstanding effort makes for great race conditions

To the Editor:

The Adirondack Mountain Bike Association, producer of the Black Fly Challenge, would like to express great appreciation for the outstanding efforts to repair and improve the roads in the Moose River Recreation Area.

The work to repair washouts in the Cellar Brook area clearly went above and beyond remediation to create a smooth, stable and substantial road that should be the envy of any town with gravel roads.

Numerous racers, volunteers and visitors commented that these are the best road conditions that have ever existed in ‘the Plains.’ As race director, I gave all the credit to you – because you deserve it.

Menges and Hannah recipients of Robert Hazard artist scholarships

The Town of Webb School Robert Hazard Young Artists Scholarship for 2012 has been awarded to Jessica Menges and Jessica Hannah, both of Old Forge.

Susan Rimato and her sons, Rex and Remington, created the scholarship to support young artists in the Adirondacks, and to celebrate the creative life of their late husband and father Robert Hazard.

The fund supports young artists who demonstrate artistic merit and dedication, and programs and projects which further the development of the arts for children and young adults.

Addressing Raquette Lake’s land uncertainty:

NY State legislature approves 1st passage of Township 40 constitutional amendment

A proposed state constitutional amendment that would settle a century-old title dispute in the Adirondacks won passage in the State Assembly late Wednesday following Senate passage Tuesday, according to sponsors Senator Betty Little and Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward. The concurrent resolution will need to be approved again next year by a newly elected State Legislature before it can be placed on the ballot for statewide approval in a general election, likely in November 2013.

“The proposed amendment will settle a very lengthy and controversial dispute between the State of New York and private property owners in Raquette Lake,” Little said.

“Doing so avoids costly litigation and benefits the public with improved Adirondack Park recreational access,” she continued. Continue reading

Otter Lake Fire Dept. grateful for support

Thee Otter Lake Fire Department would like to thank all those organizations, businesses and individuals that helped make our new firehouse dedication ceremonies a success.

Having never gone through anything like this before we were all nervous to make sure we had all the bases covered, and the support from the community made a huge difference.

An open letter from Dr. Thomas Socash

Thank you for having chosen me your physician—it has been an honor

As most are now well aware, I will be leaving Central Adirondack Family Practice and discontinuing my medical practice at the Town of Webb Professional Offices effective at close of business on Friday, July 27, 2012.

I will be available to serve your medical needs until that date. Subsequently, I will resume medical practice at the Albany VA Medical Center’s Community- Based Outpatient Clinic in Saranac Lake.

My praise goes to the Town of Webb Board for their unanimous decision to pursue contract negotiations with St. Elizabeth Medical Center. Continue reading

Frog Jump Contest: Participants, spectators enjoy hopping good time

The Annual Father’s Day Frog Jumping Contest held Sunday, June 17, on the Old Forge tennis courts, brought out frogs of all sizes and their young handlers who entered them in the contest.

Several dads, wearing outrageous ties entered the Ugly Tie Contest, which was won by Eric Hopkins of Buckingham, PA and Old Forge.

The Traveling Trophy for the fastest business-sponsored frog was awarded to George Pearson of Stump Ugly Stump Removal.

The frog was entered by his granddaughter, Alayna Pearson.

The Central Adirondack Association would like to thank everyone who came to the Annual Father’s Day Frog Jumping Contest.
