Health Center: Webb town board transitioning local lab service

The Town of Webb has agreed to give a 90-day notice to Centrex Clinical Laboratories Inc. that the town will be ending its local service agreement with the company.

Centrex is the current provider of clinical laboratory services at the Town of Webb Professional Offices in Old Forge.

The move is intended to get a 90-day notification, which is required by contract, out of the way before an expected transfer of operations to St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center that is likely to occur later this summer.

The Town of Webb has been in negotiations with St. E’s in recent months as a revamping of services offered by the local health center.

And it appears that all is settled but for final details. Continue reading

Enchanted Forest/Water Safari opens ’12 season with big splash

Hundreds of fans of the Enchanted Forest/Water Safari, lined up at its gates on Wednesday, June 13 to enjoy opening day at New York’s largest water theme park.

Katie Noonan, vice-president and director of marketing, said among the crowds who came to be the first to test out the waterslides, rides and other attractions were a number of school groups.

Behind the scenes, Noonan said Park managers were busy wrapping up training sessions with staff, making sure they were familiar with the areas in which they would be working this summer.

“Yes, we’re ready. It’s full steam ahead!” Noonan said.

This year celebrates the 57th anniversary of the park, which offers more than 50 rides and attractions, including 32 water rides. Continue reading

Fulton Chain protection: Webb considers local invasive species law

Philip Sanzone of the Fulton Chain of Lakes Association approached the Inlet and Webb Town Boards with a request to create and enact a local law that he says will make it easier to keep invasive species out of the Fulton Chain.

There is currently Eurasian Milfoil, an invasive aquatic plant, in Second, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh Lakes, Sanzone said.

And without proper control measures, the recreational quality of the lakes will lessen and do ripple damage to the local tourist economy.

CAP-21, Town of Webb team up on community block grant effort

The Town of Webb has agreed to enter into a grant application prepared by CAP-21 on behalf of the town for a community block grant.

Proceeds of a successful grant application could provide for infrastructure improvements, public service programs and business development, according to Supervisor Ted Riehle.

TOBIE Phase 2 edges forward in Eagle Bay

Supervisor Ted Riehle gave a status report on the TOBIE Phase Two project, particularly as regards to the planned public restrooms in Eagle Bay, at the Town of Webb board’s monthly meeting held on Tuesday, June 12th.

He said a bid letting is expected by the end of July for construction work relating to the project.

Those bids are expected to be opened in August, with the awarding of contracts immediately or soon thereafter.

McCauley Project: Webb authorizes Gaetano Construction involvement

Gaetano Construction has proposed that it will assess existing plans for improving the McCauley Mountain chalet and provide detailed requirements and estimates for the work.

Gaetano’s cost is expected to be between $2,000 and $2,500, and the Town of Webb Board agreed to allocate the funds at its meeting on Tuesday, June 12th.

Councilwoman Kate Russell said the detailed estimates will serve as documentation needed in submitting grant applications.

She added that the funds for Gaetano’s services can be drawn from an applicable allocation in the current budget. Continue reading

Alexandra Waterbury selected for Chautauqua Summer Dance School

Alexandra Waterbury of Old Forge will attend Chautauqua Institution’s Summer School of Fine and Performing Arts as a student in its School of Dance.

Chautauqua’s School of Dance provides a select number of talented dancers the opportunity to study with world-renowned faculty and choreographers from around the world.

Students also have the opportunity to perform with various organizations during their time at Chautauqua, including the Music School Festival Orchestra.

Out of hundreds of students who applied this year for the opportunity, only 79 were selected to join. Continue reading
