Congratulations graduates: Enjoy what your futures hold

 A NEW CHAPTER

High school graduation brings new beginnings, a renewed sense of excitement, a new chapter in life.

Congratulations to all the Town of Webb seniors who are moving on with their lives and headed for opportunities yet to be discovered.

Always remember that your parents, a long, long time ago, started a new chapter in their lives as well.

There was the excitement of finally leaving the home and being on your own, making daily decisions of what to do, where to go and how to act.

Pursuing the career goal with a college education is a great plan to have in place.

Some plans come to fruition, some get altered slightly and others take a complete turn-around. Continue reading

Graduation: A time for new beginnings, new possibilities

Let’s congratulate our graduates on completing their high school careers and consider what it all means.

John Clendenin, the Senior Associate Dean of Graduate Programs at IE University in Madrid, Spain, gave a recent lecture on graduation and its meaning to these newly minted adults and the world they are about to enter.

He addressed a common goal among high school grads: to bring change into the world.

That’s a lofty endeavor, but Clendenin says it can be accomplished with a simple algorithm.

To change the world, he said, you must first change your mind. Continue reading

Bath salts go by several names, cause same devastating results

by Dr. Adam Seigers, Medical Health Contributor

Bath salts may sound like something seemingly harmless, though these amphetamine-like street drugs carry the risk of overdose, hallucinations and death.

Delivered as a powder which can be snorted, ingested, or injected, these drugs go by the trade names of blizzard, blue silk, charge plus, ivory snow, ivory wave, ocean burst, pure ivory, purple wave, snow leopard, stardust, vanilla sky, white dove, white night and white lightning.

Since bath salts are synthetically engineered often times in a home or amateur laboratory their chemical content is never absolutely known. Continue reading

Nourished Living by Dietician Kelly Hamlin MA, RD, CDN

The return of nutritionist favorite Kelly Hamlin: You can achieve your weight loss goals using some simple math

If you are looking to drop a few pounds, it could be as easy as following some simple math. Keep in mind that a pound equals 3,500 calories (kcals), so if you consume an extra 3,500 kcals per week you’ll gain a pound.

Conversely, if you either burn off 3,500 kcals or consume 3,500 fewer kcals, you will lose a pound.

You will have a comparable one pound weight loss if you burn 1,750 more kcals and consume 1,750 less.

Journaling what you eat in a week’s time can help you determine where you need to cut the addtional calories to achieve that amount of weight loss.

Think about it this way… you can lose a half-pound a week simply by cutting 250 kcals per day from your diet. Here are some tips for you to consider: Continue reading

Growing up Adirondack by Mitch Lee

Special friend lures kid from mtn. home

The summer of 1973 was in full swing and my mother had decided to take us on a trip to her father’s farm in East Galway.

We woke up early that morning and filled the car with luggage for the overnight stay and enough stuff to keep three children busy on the two-plus hour trip.

The air temperature had fallen rapidly overnight which caused heavy fog to lay low to the ground.

For the first part of the trip my mother had the wipers of the old green Pontiac going to clear the mist from the windshield.

My four-year-old brother busied himself by belching out his own original songs and my sister quietly read a Laura Ingalls Wilder book.

On my sketch pad I scratched images of trees that turned into dragons at night.

I couldn’t wait to reach our destination. My grandfather Burgess was quite a character and I loved to visit him and his gentleman farm.

He had huge sheep, roaming geese and beef cows.

Also on the farm were horses he boarded for friends and two tall ponies for us kids to ride. My favorite was one named Mini Poo and my mind was fixated on the opportunity to ride her again. Continue reading

Just Call me Mrs. Lucky by Jan from Woodgate

Relaxation means different things to different people

Once or twice a summer I allow myself the sweet indulgence of a pedicure. Nothing fancy for sure— it’s really more of a pedi-factory, where one is lined up and seated with many other women (I have seen a stray male or two over the years).

The place I’ve gone recently is managed by one Asian male, and staffed entirely by Asian girls.

They are all beautiful, graceful and incredibly sweet. Relaxing in my massaging chair I have plenty of opportunity to observe their techniques and unending patience while tending to OPF— or Other People’s Feet.

Not gonna lie—I’ve never been a huge fan of feet.

Although I have tremendous respect for these appendages at the end of our legs—let’s face it, they haul our bodies around and take super abuse, but to me they’re still pretty gross.

Unless you’re my sister Lisa’s feet, which have been so well taken care of her entire life that they still appear brand new. Feet, generally speaking, are kind of ugly.

So anyway, there I am yesterday, my first pedi of the season. Continue reading
