DEC: Brush Burning Ban in effect through May 15

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Joe Martens has announced that all residential brush burning is prohibited in smaller communities during the state’s historically high fire-risk period from March 16 through May 15th.

Also, DEC Forest Rangers, County Emergency Management Services, and local fire departments are notifying the public that the National Weather Service has declared a Hazardous Weather Outlook for Northern New York during this time period. Several factors enable wildfires to start easily and spread quickly during this time, including the lack of green vegetation, abundance of available fuels such as dry grass and leaves, warm temperatures and wind. Girl Scouts say thanks

The Forestport Girl Scout Troop 20002 would like to say thank you to the many people that assisted us in coming to Old Forge to sell Girl Scout cookies. We contacted the town’s Visitor Information Center and were helped by Laurie Barkauskas who was instrumental in getting us to sell cookies at Snofest.

We would also like to thank the Central Adirondack Association (CAA) with their assistance and giving us a section at the Snofest to sell our cookies.

We also sold cookies at the local Kinney Drugs and Fastrac and we would like to say THANK YOU for all their support and assistance.

The girls would also like to say thank you so much for the pizza and soda at Fastrac…it was great.

And we saved the best for last.

We would like to say thank you to the community of Old Forge for buying our cookies. It is so great to see communities come together for the sake of the children.

We are excited to have met our goals and are happy to say that in August we will be going to Canada for four days.

So again, thank you all for all your support.

Elizabeth Abelbeck

Girl Scout Leader, Forestport

Ellen Wilcox takes first in regional arts contest

Ellen Wilcox of Old Forge recently took first place in the Best Texture Category for her entry of a pair of felted mittens in the “Critters and Mittens” knitting contest sponsored by TAUNY of Canton.

Wilcox was inspired to enter the contest after seeing an flyer at the Old Forge Hardware Store, where she works Thursdays in the knitting department.

Wilcox, who has been knitting since she was twelve, said she never entered a contest before, but decided to give it a try with her original design for felted wool mittens.

She described how she used large needles to knit the oversized pair of 100 percent wool mittens, then “felted” them by washing them in hot water in the washing machine.

“The hot water and agitation causes the wool to shrink, making the texture turn to felt. The process makes them much warmer than traditional wool mittens,” Wilcox said.

Her prize was a gift certificate from a yarn store in Lake Placid.

TAUNY, or Traditional Arts in Upstate New York, is a nonprofit membership organization dedicated to showcasing the folk culture and living traditions of New York’s North Country.
