Card of Thanks

I would like to thank everyone who sent me a get well card or took time out of their busy day to stop and visit for a while.

Unless you have been away from your home and family for a long time you can’t appreciate the boost a card or visit gives you.

So please accept my heartfelt “Thanks.”

Cheryl Gerrish, Old Forge

Editor’s Note: Cheryl is currently  recuperating from surgery at Sunset Nursing Home. Cards and well wishes can be sent to: Sunset Nursing Home, 232 Academy St., Boonville, NY 13309.

Water safety: Early spring thaw calls for heightened awareness

While people may be tempted to take advantage of the unusually warm weather to get a head start on river recreational activities, many seasonal safety signs and other safety measures are not yet in place for New York State boaters.

Extreme caution should be used when recreating on or near rivers, warns Brookfield Renewable Energy Group, which operates hydropower facilities in the area.

Brookfield’s Julie Smith-Galvin said her company has accelerated installation of boat barriers and safety systems typically installed in late spring.

“We ask the public to respect closed recreation access,” she said. “Be vigilant about safety by avoiding dams and structures such as powerhouses and substations, and by observing all signage, warning signals, and sirens.” Continue reading

Northern Forest Canoe Trail seeking youths for summer program

Northern Forest Explorers, the signature youth program of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail (NFCT), offers rural youth five-day paddling trips that support healthy lifestyles and connect them with pride to the natural world, to their communities, and to the North Country region as a whole.

Beginning in June, 20 weeklong trips will take place in the four states of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail, up from last year’s twelve. Trips will take place in New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

More than 200 young people aged 10 to 14 from communities along the Trail will be given an opportunity to take part in the trips.

Participants learn basic paddling and outdoor skills, environmental and ecological relationships, and fundamentals of leadership and self-development.

All trips are guided by local outfitters and a specially trained Northern Forest Explorers intern.

The 2012 Northern Forest Explorers program in the Adirondack region that includes communities from Old Forge to Long Lake is scheduled for July 9 through 13th.

The fee is $100 per student and financial aid is available. Space is limited.

Applications are due by May 27th and are available online at: http://www.northernforestcanoetrail. org/NorthernForestExplorers YouthProgram-3/Summer-2012- Trip-Schedule-87, or by contacting Youth Program Director Roger Poor at (603) 801-9597 or Roger@northernforestcanoetrail.org.

by Carolyn Belknap Sec’y, Old Forge Camera Club

This winter, the library hosted an exhibit of photographs taken by members of the Old Forge Camera Club.

Fourteen members of the club exhibited a total of 51 works.

The show was enjoyed by many library patrons during the winter months, and preparing the works for the show was a great learning experience for members of the club.

The members of the club look forward to doing more exhibits at the library in the future.

To thank the library, the club members decided to donate books for a new digital photography section in the library.

The books can now be found in the non-fiction section of the library, and club members hope that local residents will enjoy the opportunity to learn more about digital photography.

In addition, Old Forge Camera Club member Sue Kiesel will present a “Basic Digital Photography Workshop” at the library for interested participants ages 10 through adult.

The workshop will be held on Thursday, June 7 from 5 to 7 p.m. Call the library at (315) 369-6008 to register. Walk-ins are welcome.

The Old Forge Camera Club meets at View on the second Thursday of the month at 7 p.m.

If you are interested in joining, drop in at a meeting or e-mail: oldforgecameraclubowner@yahoogroups.com.
