18th annual event Go-Karts to rev Tuesday for Calypso’s Cove charity race

Established in 1994, the Calypso’s Cove Charity Go-Kart Race seeks to raise money within the community for local charities, organizations and families in need.

Since its inception, the Go-Kart race has raised over $170,000. This event brings local businesses together to vie for the coveted trophy and to work together as a community for worthy causes.

The 18th Annual Calypso’s Cove Charity Go-Kart Race will take place on Tuesday, September 13. A rain date is set for Thursday, September 15.

The beneficiaries this year include the Friends of the Polar Bears, to aid their effort of purchasing a yurt for McCauley Mountain, and MAC’s Safe Ride, to aid in the effort to purchase a larger van.

All are encouraged to come out to the race and support the local community and these two worthy causes.

Gates will open at 5 p.m. with racing to begin at 5:30 p.m. sharp. The entry fee for a team of five racers is $225. Each racer will drive in two heats.

The entry fee covers the cost of admission, food and beverage for the race team. Team leaders should send their check for $225 and a list of five racers to Calypso’s Cove Charity Go-Kart Race, 3183 State Route 28, Old Forge, NY 13420.

The deadline for entry is 5 p.m. Monday, September 12, unless the team limit has been met.

Racers should call (315) 369-6145 to confirm postponement due to rain the day of the race.

Spectators will be admitted for a donation of $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12. The donation includes food and beverage.

SIGNS & THE PLANNING BOARD

Q: This may sound like a stupid question, but what is a sign?

1. Any sign erected by Federal, State, or local government or agency thereof; Continue reading

Parents: Lead by example in fight against childhood obesity

Last week we had the opportunity to attend the NYS Fair. Love the Fair! I grew up not far from the Fairgrounds and attended every chance I had.

One of my favorites things to do at the Fair is people-watch. But sadly, one thing I really took notice of this year was the number of obese children in attendance.

While childhood obesity may be due to genetic or hormonal issues, often the culprit is poor eating habits and inactivity.

What can we do to fix this problem? Continue reading

Growing up Adirondack by Mitch Lee

Retreating to comfort of the woods following a school daze

It was early September and I was not quite ready to give up my summer to my fourth grade teacher Mrs. deCamp.

But when the bus turned in our driveway to pick up my sister and me that first day of school, it was clear that Mrs. deCamp had won.

I gripped my lunch box like a security blanket as I made my way up the three familiar bus steps and made my way to my seat.

I looked out the window and saw the early morning fog dressing the grasses with dew as the sun tried to break through the haze.

It was a muggy morning, much too warm for the windbreaker my mother insisted I wear.

When the bus was out of sight of our house, I peeled it off and wrapped it around my waist.

As the bus moved along we swished past the familiar forest of my summer’s exploits. Continue reading
