Matthew Beal has been working hard the last few months to put together a concert at the Strand Theatre that will combine the musical talents of local and visiting artists, in the hopes of inspiring area young people of the opportunities available in the music industry.
The event, scheduled for Thursday, June 5, will feature the local group Rose Red, Old Forge native Gwen Tracy, and Cass Dillon of Rockville Centre, a 28-year-old rising star in the worlds of music and film. Continue reading
The Adirondack Trail Blazers will sponsor two upcoming events at the Strand Theatre in Old Forge that will benefit the Boonville-based baseball team.
The first event, Cartoon Mania, will be held Saturday and Sunday, April 26 and 27, featuring 14 classic Looney Tunes cartoons.
Showings will be held both days at noon and 3 p.m.
Seven cartoon shorts will be shown prior to an intermission that will include games, giveaways and an appearance by the Trail Blazers’ mascot, Adirondack Jack.
Following intermission, the remaining cartoons will be screened. Admission is $5. Continue reading
Musical artist Matthew Beal is proof that one can take their biggest lifelong passion and turn it into a gratifying career. When he first picked up a guitar at the age of six he was hooked on making music, he said, and through decades of perseverance has made a name for himself in the industry as a performer, educator, songwriter, producer and promoter.
Beal, who goes by the professional name Matthew Thomas, hails from Long Island where he began playing at local clubs at the age of 15.
He was mentored by a local musician who introduced him to such artists as Ritchie Blackmore of Black Sabbath and exposed him to every aspect of behind-the-scenes musical production. Continue reading
The Kiwanis Club of the Central Adirondacks, in cooperation with Bob Card and Helen Zyma of the Strand Theatre, sponsored its annual Bob Thayer Memorial Holiday Movie for Kids event on Saturday, December 21st.
According to event chairman Jim Connerty, 90 children and 67 adults attended the movie, Walking with Dinosaurs. Children were admitted free of charge and also received a complimentary drink and popcorn. Continue reading
The Kiwanis Club’s Bob Thayer Memorial Free Holiday Movie for Kids is set for Saturday, December 21 at the Strand Theatre in Old Forge.
Children ages 12 and under are admitted to the movie free of charge when accompanied by an adult who will also be admitted free.
This year’s featured film will be, “Walking with Dinosaurs.”
Aside from free admission to the movie, children will receive popcorn and a drink at no charge. Continue reading
With the December 31 deadline approaching for full digital film conversion at the Strand Theatre, co-owner Bob Card says he is anticipating the receipt of four working digital projectors within the next couple of weeks.
“The equipment is ordered and if all goes as planned we will be installing the projectors the first week of December,” he said, adding that his is reluctant to celebrate until the projectors are fully installed and in operation.
The raffle drawing for the movie-themed quilt created by the Pointed Pine Quilters of Old Forge was held on Sunday, October 13 at the Strand Theatre.

Strand employee Molly Rodriguez drew the winning ticket that was purchased by Olivia Olson of Rochester.
The drawing, which was held as a fundraiser for the Strand’s digital conversion project, raised $2,197 for the cause.
