Sports Challenge: Kiwanis raises nearly $7,000 for youth projects

Over 100 people participated in the 14th Annual Central Adirondack Kiwanis Club Winter Sports Challenge in Old Forge on Saturday, February 15 as part of the Old Forge Winter Carnival.

The proceeds, estimated at over $7,000, will be used to fund continuing Kiwanis children’s projects and operations of The Kommunity Youth and Activity Center (KYAC) in Old Forge.

The No. 1 Fundraising Team was Team Rintrona who will receive the Traveling Plaque a Permanent Certificate and $50.

The No. 2 Fundraising Team was a tie between Team Foley and Town of Webb School Teachers who will each receive a Permanent Certificate. Continue reading

Griffin Kleps named Webb school Student of Month

The Kiwanis Club of the Central Adirondacks has announced that its Student of the Month for March is Griffin Kleps. Griffin is the son of David and Sharon Kleps of Thendara and is a senior at Town of Webb Union Free School.

The Student of the Month is a program initiated by the Kiwanis Club, in cooperation with the Town of Webb School, that recognizes senior students.  Continue reading

Snowshoe Quest challenges racers at McCauley Mountain

The Kiwanis Club of the Central Adiron-dacks held its 14th Annual Kiwanis Winter Sports Challenge on Saturday, February 15 at McCauley Mountain.

The event included the traditional cross-country ski and snowshoe treks to raise funds for various Kiwanis children’s projects and the Kommunity Youth and Activity Center (KYAC) in Old Forge. race startThe 4th Annual Mountainman McCauley Mountain Snowshoe Quest, a 6 km distance Racers Points Series Race—part of the Dion Empire State Snowshoe Series—was also held on Saturday.  Continue reading

Kiwanis Winter Sports Challenge to benefit kids projects, Feb. 15th

The Kiwanis Club of the Central Adirondacks will sponsor the 14th Annual Kiwanis Winter Sports Challenge at McCauley Mountain Ski Center on Saturday, February 15th.

The event is part of the Old Forge Winter Carnival and will include snowshoe and cross-country ski events.

There will be recreational 1K and 8K cross-country ski and snowshoe fundraising races and in cooperation with Mountain-man Outdoor Supply Company, there will also be an 8K New York State-USA Sanctioned Snowshoe Race. Course distances will be subject to snow conditions. Continue reading

Central Ad’k Kiwanis honors Al Stripp

Members of Central Adirondack Kiwanis presented longtime member Al Stripp with an Honorary Membership at an event held on Thursday, January 16th.

Stripp, a 50-plus year resident of Old Forge, joined Central Adirondack Kiwanis in 1993 and served as club treasurer for several years. He was active in all the many child-oriented  programs of Kiwanis for over 20 years.

During his years as art teacher at the Town of Webb School, he also coached many championship soccer teams.

He was a board member of the Central Adirondack Association, and along with his late wife Lorraine, was a longtime volunteer, at the Arts Center/Old Forge, now VIEW.

He currently resides at Sunset Nursing Home in Boonville where he enjoys participating in a variety of activities.

Samantha Notley recognized as January Student of Month

The Kiwanis Club of the Central Adirondacks has announced that its Student of the Month for January is Samantha Notley. Samantha is the daughter of Mike Notley and Wanda Notley of Old Forge and is a senior at Town of Webb Union Free School.

The Student of the Month is a program initiated by the Kiwanis Club, in cooperation with the Town of Webb School, that recognizes senior students.

Each month from September to April the school administrators select a Student of the Month who will receive $50 and with his/her parents are invited to a Kiwanis Recognition Event to make a brief presentation.

In May, the Kiwanis Scholarship Committee will select a Student of the Year who will receive $500.

The Town of Webb Police Bene-volent Association (PBA) will partner with Central Adirondack Kiwanis in the Student of the Year award.

The selection criteria for the program includes community service, academics, athletic involvement, student need, and extra curricular activities.

Kiwanis to host Free Kids Movie at Strand

The Kiwanis Club’s Bob Thayer Memorial Free Holiday Movie for Kids is set for Saturday, December 21 at the Strand Theatre in Old Forge.

Children ages 12 and under are admitted to the movie free of charge when accompanied by an adult who will also be admitted free.

This year’s featured film will be, “Walking with Dinosaurs.”

Aside from free admission to the movie, children will receive popcorn and a drink at no charge.  Continue reading
