Snowshoe Quest challenges racers at McCauley Mountain

The Kiwanis Club of the Central Adiron-dacks held its 14th Annual Kiwanis Winter Sports Challenge on Saturday, February 15 at McCauley Mountain.

The event included the traditional cross-country ski and snowshoe treks to raise funds for various Kiwanis children’s projects and the Kommunity Youth and Activity Center (KYAC) in Old Forge. race startThe 4th Annual Mountainman McCauley Mountain Snowshoe Quest, a 6 km distance Racers Points Series Race—part of the Dion Empire State Snowshoe Series—was also held on Saturday. 

It was jointly sponsored by Mountainman Outdoor Supply Company, Central Adirondack Kiwanis Club, McCauley Mountain, Dion Snowshoes and MSR Snowshoes.

The race course began at the bottom of the mountain, and meandered its way up in elevation, eventually reaching the rarely seen McCauley backcountry.

“Racers snowshoed around the backside of the mountain, testing fitness levels as they gained in elevation along the way. The climb and tour of the backcountry was followed by a lightning fast, quad-busting descent to the finish, where they were greeted by spectators and warm facilities,” said Race Director Nanette Shovea-Burke.

The winners of the Men’s 6K Snowshoe Quest were: 1st – Matt Westerlund (41.08); 2nd – Jeff Walker (45.44); and 3rd – Eric Hulbert (50.10).
