Snowmaker’s Ball: Record crowd supports Kinderwood

A record-sized crowd gathered at McCauley Mountain on Saturday, March 29 for the Snowmaker’s Ball, an annual fund-raising event that supports the Kinderwood Preschool Program.

Close to 100 people enjoyed dinner, dancing to tunes spun by DJ Colin Clark, and raffles.

“This year personified exactly what the Snowmaker’s Ball is about…having a great time for a great cause. It’s a come-as-you-are event, with some people coming straight from the slopes wearing their ski attire to others arriving in more formal wear. And the bottom line is that everyone has a lot of fun,” said Kinderwood board member Sharon Finkle-Kleps. Continue reading →

Seventh Lake: Early camps & the Seventh Lake House

—Part TWO —

Before the railroads, to reach Seventh Lake and points beyond, the hunters, trappers, sportsmen and their guides used the Chain’s lakes and, when necessary, the portages between the lakes as their highways during most of the 19th century.

Today, participants in the annual Adirondack Canoe Classic use this route.

Then, with the increase in travelers, women as well as men, hotels and hunting camps were built.

Along the Fulton Chain, these started with Arnolds in 1837, then the Forge House in 1871 and by 1874 Fourth Lake had Buell Camp (later Perrie’s Third Lake House and Barrett’s Bald Mountain House), Snyder’s Camp, Lewis H. Lawrence’s Camp and Jack Sheppard’s Camp.² Continue reading →

Inlet students celebrate PARP end with Goodsell Museum tour

Inlet Common School students celebrated the end of their Parents as Reading Partners program by taking a tour of the Goodsell Museum in Old Forge on Friday, March 28th.

Museum Director Kate Lewis provided the students with general information and explained museum etiquette prior to conducting the tour. Then the children were separated into two groups: kindergarten through second grade and third through sixth, with Administrative Assistant Kristy Rubyor handling the younger students.

Lewis took charge of the older group who had the opportunity to view the historic files, maps and photographs in the research room. Continue reading →

Niccolls Church seeking April Food Sense orders

Niccolls Memorial Presbyterian Church is taking orders for the Food Sense package for April. Each “unit” costs $15.50. This program is open to all. There are no eligibility requirements nor is there any obligation to purchase food every month.

The April unit consists of Italian meatballs, Pollock fillets, Italian sausage, veal patties, ground chicken, ziti, spaghetti sauce, frozen pizza snacks, peach slices, carrots and two fresh produce items. Continue reading →

Sketches bring back fond memories of Florida vacation

Our extended spring break was approaching and it seemed as if the entire town was making plans to temporarily move to a new zip code.

Every kid at school was getting itchy to go away too.

I’m pretty sure our teachers were even having a hard time focusing on getting us on task as they made their own plans to find some sunny spot to rejuvenate themselves.

Our destination this year was St. Augustine, Florida. I was packed and had my sketch book ready to record everything I found along the way. Continue reading →

As snow lingers, so do appearances of the Snowy Owls

Winter hung on for another week with a couple mornings below zero and fresh snow three mornings just to show us who’s running the show. There may be some sap in the buckets as the temperatures at the end of the week did stay above freezing for most of the day.

I made a couple more runs down to Fairfield to see the snowy owls.

On Wednesday Carolyn Belknap and I went down for the afternoon. She had a new camera body that she wanted to try out.

It took us a while before we found the first owl sitting in a field. The wind was blowing about 30 miles an hour and this bird didn’t want to move. Continue reading →
