Gordons honored at Barnstormers Snowmobile Club’s Annual Dinner

The Inlet Barnstormers Snowmobile Club held their annual dinner meeting at the Steak House in Thendara on Wednesday, March 12 which was well attended despite the poor traveling conditions.2014 March Dinner Meeting 021

During the gathering, out-going President Bob Gordon was presented service awards for his 16 years of dedication to the Barnstormers.

He received the award from in-coming president, Ron Nihill.

Vice President Bob Gates also presented Gordon and his wife, Linda, with Lifetime Membership certificates to the club for their service. 2014 March Dinner Meeting 019

CAP-21: Shamrock Reception spotlights local non-profits

The Central Adirondack Partnership for the 21st Century (CAP-21) hosted a reception for state, county and local officials prior to the start of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Old Forge on Friday, March 14th.

The event, which took place at American Legion Post 893, gave area representatives the opportunity to meet in an informal setting to talk about the value and importance of non-profit organizations to the economic and social fabric of our communities.

Town of Webb Board of Education holds March 18 meeting

The Town of Webb UFSD Board of Education held a meeting on Tuesday, March 18, where it took the actions summarized as follows (not official minutes).

• Approved the Minutes of February 18, 2014 meeting.

• Approved the Warrants and Claims.

• Approved the Committee on Special Education Recommen-dations.

• Approved the CSEA Sick Bank Committee Recommen-dation

• Approved the Resignation for Retirement of Patricia Harwood, Special Education teacher, with regret and appreciation for her 29 years of service at the Town of Webb UFSD/33 years in education, effective June 30, 2014.

Providing details of home building always a good plan

Q: If the house I want to build is less than 1,500 square feet the law does not require “stamped” plans, right?

A: Generally that is correct. However, good plans are still required.

Q: Our plan is 1,492 square feet. Why is the code office requiring a set of plans?

A: This office still needs to verify that what is being proposed satisfies the minimum standards of the NYS Residential Code, NYS Energy Code, and all local zoning requirements.

Q: Why? The plans don’t have to be stamped by a licensed engineer or architect.

A: That exemption only applies to the certification of the plans by a design professional; it does not exempt the requirement to provide construction plans and details to show compliance to the codes. Continue reading →

Board of Regents selection process should be open, transparent

The Board of Regents, a 230-year-old institution, makes decisions that impact our schools and students in profound ways.

The board selects the commissioner of education and sets policy, including unfunded mandates, which the State Education Department carries out.

If you’ve been following my columns, you are aware of the concerns people have about our educational system.

The Common Core Standards were rushed through, and when the board’s hand-selected education commissioner was faced with criticism, he cancelled public meetings on the subject.

Considering the important role the Board of Regents plays in our state, New Yorkers deserve an open and transparent process by which members of the board are selected.  Continue reading →

Letty’s parade reunion

Ever since Hugh T. Farley (R,C,I 49th District) was elected to the State Senate in 1976, Letty Haynes of Inlet has been curious about his roots. Though his biography stated that he was from Indian Lake, was it possible that he was one of six “Farley boys” who grew up next door to her in Watertown in the late 1930’s?

The 70-plus year mystery was serendipidously solved along the St. Paddy’s Day Parade route on Friday, March 14 when Dick Bird, who was walking with the senator, spotted Letty on the sidelines and suggested he stop and say hello to her. Continue reading →

Old Forge: St. Paddy’s Parade & Stew Winners Announced

The winning entries at the Old Forge St. Patrick’s Day Parade were announced by the judges following the parade. Taking first place honors was the Cheers to St. Patrick’s Day float. IMG_5282*******

IMG_4831*******Coming in second was the Ouchi O’Lympics, and in third place was the Old Forge Irish Setters Club.

The People’s Choice went to the Chip ‘N Dale Dancers featuring Chip Kiefer and Dale Heroux.

A special Honorable Mention went to the Synchronized Snowplows for their memorial tributes to the late Bob Lowenberg and Bud Gribneau, longtime parade participants.IMG_4680********

Winners of the Irish Stew Contest were as follows: first place – Felicity Davey and Charlie Kiefer for Adirondack Café; second place – Nick Bankert for Last Run Café; and third place – Chip Kiefer for Maloy’s Restaurant.
