Ever since Hugh T. Farley (R,C,I 49th District) was elected to the State Senate in 1976, Letty Haynes of Inlet has been curious about his roots. Though his biography stated that he was from Indian Lake, was it possible that he was one of six “Farley boys” who grew up next door to her in Watertown in the late 1930’s?
The 70-plus year mystery was serendipidously solved along the St. Paddy’s Day Parade route on Friday, March 14 when Dick Bird, who was walking with the senator, spotted Letty on the sidelines and suggested he stop and say hello to her.
“I took the opportunity to ask him if he ever lived in Watertown, and he said yes, that’s where he grew up. We didn’t really play together, I knew he and his brothers simply as ‘the Farley boys.’ Our house burned when I was 12 and we moved elsewhere in Watertown. But my husband Red and I always wondered if he was one of those boys, and now I know,” Letty said.
