Snofest 2014: Manufacturers unveiling new sleds this weekend

Major snowmobile manufacturers representing Arctic Cat, Polaris, SkiDoo and Yamaha will reveal their 2015 models at the 7th Annual Snofest at the George T. Hiltebrant Recreation Center on North Street in Old Forge on March 7, 8, and 9th.

The weekend will include demo rides, snowmobile accessory vendors, live music, ice carvings and raffles.

On Saturday, North Country Heli-flight will be on location to give helicopter rides, weather permitting.

Two local individuals will be honored at the upcoming 6th Annual Herkimer County STOP-DWI Law Enforcement Recognition Breakfast for their efforts in curbing drinking and driving in their community.

Cold temps cause problems above and below ground

While the NYS DOT has responded to the pleas of Town of Webb Supervisor Ted Riehle to caution motorists by marking hazardous road conditions along sections of Route 28 from Old Forge to Eagle Bay—much of which can be attributed to consistently cold temperatures—Riehle said that TOW Public Works personnel have been dealing with their own set of problems with underground water systems due to the sub-zero weather. Town of Forestport: New law allows for appealing of Planning Board decisions

The Town of Forestport has added a new article to its Site Review Law, which governs the use and development of real property within the town.

The article, titled Article 16, allows for a variance process to be administered by the local Town Board.

This means property owners will be allowed to appeal decisions of the Forestport Planning Board and, if successful, be granted some form of a use variance.

First-term Supervisor Parker Snead, who took office at the start of the year, said the law was needed, as the town has no Zoning Ordinance, and thus, no Zoning Board of Appeals. Continue reading →

With the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Old Forge just a week away, chairmen Chip Kiefer and Tim Foley want to remind revelers that there are many ways to participate in the iconic event.

Community Pride Day slated for May 7th; sponsorship sign-up deadline is March 25

Community Pride Day, the 13th annual clean-up day that involves the communities of Thendara, Old Forge, Eagle Bay, Big Moose, Inlet, Raquette Lake, Blue Mountain Lake, Long Lake, Indian Lake, and Speculator, is scheduled for Wednesday, May 7th.
