Town of Webb Board of Education holds March 4th meeting

The Town of Webb UFSD Board of Education held a meeting on Tuesday, March 4, where it took the actions summarized as follows (not official minutes).

Approved the Minutes of February 18, 2014 meeting.

Approved the Warrants and Claims.

Approved the 2013-2014 spring sports coaches: Volunteer to Assist the Varsity Baseball Coach – Patrick Perkins; and Volunteer to Assist the Modified Baseball Coach – Mark Johnston.

Approved election inspectors/poll watchers for Budget Vote on May 20, 2014:

Dora Burnett, Pauline MacDonald, Mona Lincoln, Joan Spring, Betty Draper, and Anne Hasby. Alternate Election Inspectors – Carol Clark and Janine Phaneuf.  Continue reading

U14 Polar Bears compete at NYS Championships

The Polar Bear U14 Alpine Team, all members of whom were named to the NY State Championship Team, raced in the first weekend of slalom competition at Holiday Valley Ski Area in Ellicotville on Saturday and Sunday, March 1 and 2nd.

They will travel to Windham Mountain Ski Resort in the Catskills for the final weekend of competition on Saturday and Sunday, March 8 and 9th.

The results of the Sunday Slalom Run were as follows:

Ladies

17th – Alexis Hollister

30th – Alex Sutherland

35th – Hannah Kane

46th – Laura Levi

Men

25th – Charlie Uzdavinis

45th – Blake Greene

Kandahar: Two Polar Bear Alpine skiers advance to championships

Polar Bear U10 alpine racers Macie Eisenhart and Trevor Greene and U12 racer Tyler Kane traveled to Greek Peak Mountain Resort on Saturday and Sunday, March 1 and 2 to compete at the annual Kandahar Festival.

Due to their placements in the two-day competition, Trevor and Tyler qualified for the Kandahar Championships that will be held at Belleayre Mountain on Saturday, March 8th.

Additionally, Trevor Greene was named the recipient of the Skimeister Award, an award that is based on combined results for all four runs during the weekend and awarded to the top skier in each class. Continue reading

Barkauskas & Lawrence qualify for Eastern Alpine Teams

Two Polar Bear U-16 Alpine racers have qualified to compete against other racers representing the entire northeast at separate racing venues from March 6 through 10th.

Carter Lawrence qualified third for the Eastern Championship Team and will race close to home at Whiteface Mountain from March 6 through 10th. Cy Barkauskas qualified third for the Eastern Final Team which will be competing at Sunday River, ME from March 6 through 9th. Continue reading

Dinner to benefit local youth groups, March 12

A fundraising dinner to benefit AYSO, the Kommunity Youth Activity Center (KYAC), and the Old Forge Little League program will be held at the Front Door Diner on Wednes-day, March 12 from 5 to 8 p.m. 

The menu will include $12 and $15 meal selections, eat-in or take-out, with 50 percent of sales divided equally between these three youth-oriented organizations.

Please show your support of youth programming in our community by attending the dinner.

Jack Boylan honored for 55 years with Masons

Brothers from North Woods Lodge #849 in Old Forge joined W.B. Jack Boylan at his home on Saturday, March 1 to present him his 55-year certificate and pin.

Brothers making the presentation are, from left, W. Stephen Park, DSA, R.W. Andrew Getty, Grand Steward and Master, Br. Theodore Riehle, senior deacon, W.B. Boylan, R.W. Timothy Harwood, District Deputy Grand Master, 2nd Oneida District, and Br. Thomas Smedley, Chaplain.

Brother Boylan was initiated on November 21, 1957, passed on December 5,1957, and raised on January 16, 1958 at North Woods #849. He served as Lodge Master in 1974.

For many years he was the lone pharmacist in the Old Forge area, prior to moving to Arizona. He has since returned to make his home in Old Forge with his wife, Margo. He will celebrate his 80th birthday on March 13th.

Thank you for a great Inlet Frozen Fire & Lights

The Town of Inlet and the Inlet Area Business Association would like to thank the following individuals and organizations for helping to make Inlet’s 12th Annual Frozen Fire & Lights on Saturday, February 22 such a success.

Thank you to Dennis Hudson for his master of ceremonies performance and for manning the starting line at the top of the Fern Park sledding hill.
