Polar Bear U10 and U12 alpine racers continued to dominate at a Kombi Race held at Snow Ridge on Saturday, February 22nd. The results in the women’s and men’s divisions were as follows:
U10 Women

(Trevor Greene did not finish his first run but had an awesome second run.)
U12 Men

Racers from the Town of Webb School Alpine Ski Team who were named to the NY State Championship Team competed in the state championships at Bristol Mountain in Canandaigua on Monday and Tuesday, February 24 and 25th.
TOW School Alpine Team: Griffin Kleps, Chloe Barkauskas, Cy Barkauskas, Conner Glasser, Carter Lawrence, Hunter Lawrence, Ally Cooper, John Gaffney, Lauren Beckingham, Corey Down, Coach Tom Down.
Sixty-three athletes on each of the boys and girls teams, representing eight sections throughout the state, competed in the championships.
In the Girls Slalom, Chloe Barkauskas came in 34th. In the Girls Giant Slalom, Ally Cooper took 30th; Chloe Barkauskas, 31st; and Mara Gaffney, 38th. Continue reading
Town of Webb School and Polar Bear nordic skier Megan Greene has been named the women’s individual Sectional III Champion and will compete for the Mid-Atlantic Team in the Junior Nationals at the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, VT from March 1 through 8th.
She received a nordic medal for placing ninth in the distance skate race at the NY State Championships held in Rochester on Monday, February 24th.
The weatherman tells me we are going to have a couple more weeks of cold winter weather…so what else is new? This past weekend gave us some sunshine and warmer temperatures. It gave a little reprieve from the cold, but there was lots of wind.
Karen and I went on a snowy owl search north of Lowville after Saturday’s Chili Bowl Luncheon at View. There were a couple owls reported up in the wind farm area off 177, and I have to tell you the wind was blowing up in that area.
The blades on the wind generators were just a-spinning.
I think the owls were hunkered down somewhere, because we searched for three hours before finding one just before dark on Gardner Road off West Road west of Lowville. Continue reading
Musical artist Matthew Beal is proof that one can take their biggest lifelong passion and turn it into a gratifying career. When he first picked up a guitar at the age of six he was hooked on making music, he said, and through decades of perseverance has made a name for himself in the industry as a performer, educator, songwriter, producer and promoter.
Beal, who goes by the professional name Matthew Thomas, hails from Long Island where he began playing at local clubs at the age of 15.
He was mentored by a local musician who introduced him to such artists as Ritchie Blackmore of Black Sabbath and exposed him to every aspect of behind-the-scenes musical production. Continue reading
Dominick Ventura, a freshman at St. John Fisher College, was selected to be a driver assistant for a motorcade for Vice President Joseph Biden who had a speaking engagement at Monroe Community College on January 29th.

Upon reaching his destination, the vice president took some time to pose with each of the assisting drivers.
Dominick is the son of Richard and Jennifer Ventura of Port Leyden and the grandson of Larry and Sharon Ventura of Old Forge.
We would like to express our deepest appreciation for the kindness, memories shared, prayers, sympathies and support we have and continue to receive during our time of profound grief from the sudden loss of our son, Kyle.
